Mushrooms... How do I move them? Do I have to cut a chunk of rock off like a zoo? or do I just grab & pull? Or is there no way to move these things? There is a mushroom overlapping my favored mushroom and it is browning it slightly, cant get to the light.

HELP. thanks.

lol you have problems with shrooms maybe i should tell my boss that...

i think you can just lift them off

lol, my shroom problems are the least of your worries when I am there ;)

That'd be good, theres a few little ones forming that I want to stick in different areas so they can grow and be stuck in the little tank when its ready.

do not grab and pull them, they can die and leave a brownish slime as well (Not good). Use a razor blade and slowly scrap the base of it and easily pull it off. Best way is to chip off a small piece of rock that it is on. So at least it is attached to something and can easily mount onto another rock (Supergule).

You can get a scalpel or x-acto knife and cut it away the best you can but it will eventually grow back becuase you likely can't get 100% of it off. Best is to dremel the top layer of rock away or just break up the rock.

Mushrooms can become evil in a mature tank so best to keep them isolated from your main structures or be prepared to trade rocks in at the LFS for new ones every so often.

Do LFS give extra credit for a mushroom covered mature rock when you trade in for just a chunk of liverock?

After using various powertools with LR, I'd shy away from a dremel and cutting. Everything I've ever used that touched the LR, or any SW in general has rusted. I even tried to be careful and wife everything off and spray with WD40 afterwards, but to no avail. Hopefully you'll have better luck

While you could try as not all LFS are the same but most will just swap the rock for a similiar sized one. You can always try to sell them here if you think you can get more money then buy a new rock with the proceeds. In general, while it's more work for you, splitting and selling smaller chuncks will net more money that the whole thing if there are lots on the rock. The Frag swap is coming up soon ( Oct. ) and there is always a shortage of softies for sale at the swap. Majority of people bring acros/sps frags and a fair number of attendees are newbie types looking for that sort of stuff.

I am in no way going to be ready for the swap in October. Maybe next year. But if I am ready next year, you can bet I will be bringing out softies, zoo's and LPS. I am not doing any SPS or acro's in the forsee-able future.

Is it the bits or the full tool that rusts? I can deal with having dedicated bits and such for saltwater. If you use a cutting disk it really probably wouldnt last much longer than one sawing session anyways. My dremel is nearly totally coated in plastic... seems like it would be difficult to rust up.

I don't recall having a rust problem with my bits or my dremel.
