skimmer qualifications for vodka dosing (1 Viewer)

well, I've got mine on a 75, so it's rated 3x higher than my tank. I've got a nice needlewheel air restriction on it and I'm using a feed pump. I haven't had to readjust it once, but we'll see how that lasts...

My point was that IMO, I woulnd't use a TF1000 on a 150, much less a 225 even lightly stocked. I used two TF1000's on a nicely stocked 125. I guess I would be curious as to David G's thoughts on the "rating" of a TF. I'm just going by my experience. It's a decent skimmer for the money but I don't buy the ratings on most skimmers. Who is doing the rating? If it's the company making it....well they want to sell skimmers. I think it's the same with UV's. You really need to oversize depending on your needs...

I'm right there with you on the rating thing... a prizm on a 100 gallon tank? NEVER! I'm thinkin' it'll be good on my 75, though.

I'm also curious as to DG's rating on the TF.

Personally 75-90gallon is where I rank it. By no means would I say that a turbo-flotor is oversized for a 75g.

If you did attempt dosing vodka, I'd take it very close and be conservative.

I dosed for about a month. I got up to .3mL/100L or about .6mL into a 55gallon. My water was almost always at least a little cloudy. I am running a Tunze 9010 on my BB 55. I was sick of the turbidity so I stopped and now the water is nice and clear. Im not sure what I was doing wrong. I upped the feeding and kept the skimmer open all the way.

I wouldnt run a TF-1000 on anything larger then a 75, ( with the OR pump). Ive never moded one to recirc, but with that and a mesh wheel you may have a chance.

How's the dosing going everyone? I currently dose I capful of Everclear 151 per day. This is a little on the conservative side.

I need some opinions: Would it be wise to dose vodka (or everclear) in conjuction with sugar and also vinegar. By adding smaller amounts of all three simultaneaously (polish spelling for "at the same time") would we be able to promote a greater diversity of bacterial growth? Instead of promoting a monoculture of one particular bacterial strain due to the restriction of one carbon source by adding three carbon sources we may be able to get a wider diversity of bacterial sources.
Opinions please.

I have been contemplating the same thing and was thinking of adding sugar to my regime and then in a couple weeks add the vinegar. I have been dosing 20ml of vodka a day.

I ran a T1000 with OR2500 pump on my dual 125g setup heavily stocked and it kept up. Barely but it did the job. I had no algae problems and I had great SPS growth and color. I would suggest that skimmer to anyone up to 150g at least.

This seems to be an unknown at this point. I talked to a microbiologist (who's in the hobby) and he indicated the whole 'monoculture' theory isn't completely accurate. It's more that some species may outcompete and become more dominant than others. But which species/genus those are, who knows, other than they are chemoautotrophes. Ultimately, they are simple forms of organic carbon, I'm sure there's got to be some preference among different species of bacteria, but it's not known.

IMHO, the only way to maintain bacteria species diversity.... dose bacteria cultures. This may be a bit costly on your system Stan :) The dosing for Probidio is 1 amoule per 1000 liters (~250g) every two weeks, for Zeo, 1 drop per 25 g/twice weekly.

I've stopped dosing vodka now, I plan on starting Zeo after Bob finishes my reactor.

Cool article, I am starting to dose a combination as well. I use one capful of everclear and one of vinegar to start. Since I have consistently used everclear I am curious to see the results by adding the extra vinegar.

Stan, how much everclear do you have to dose on such a big tank? I didn't know they sold the stuff by the gallon!:beerchug:

I dose one capful about 5ml daily. The stronger the acohol content the less you need.

Great article! thanks Matt. Looks like I have something new to play with:biggthumpup:

Yeah, Im not so sure what it gets you, other than that others are experimenting with it... Even if there were some difference obtained was it it to the changes in organic carbon, the addition of bacteria strains on a regular basis, or the 'maturity' of the bacteria biomass? One couldn't say....

Their are a ton of them. What kind of info are you looking for?
