Surprise, Another SPS Tank (1 Viewer)

Then how do you expect to keep those acros alive?! :). I hear you on the established biome though. I keep thinking about the idea of a club source of established media. I think I might be the one that just needs to step up and volunteer to hold that tank. I will continue to think on this.

So jealous. That’s awesome though Ben!

Alright so I fully commuted to the pH obsession just to put it to rest.

I got a new Milwaukee SE220 pH probe for the display, 250ml jars of 7 and 10 calibration solution (way cheaper and less packaging waste as it only takes ~10ml of solution per use), cleaning and storage solutions.

I got the probe and solution to room temp and calibrated:

Milwaukee probe immediately reads .1 pH higher than my couple week old and calibrated double junction BRS probe.

Now I’ll give it a week and see what the numbers look like and see if I can pull off the scrubber. I doubt it, as the calcium and alkalinity demand have MASSIVELY increased since I out it on. I was dosing Kalk just overnight but switched it to 24/7 as I wanted to see what the stability would do and didn’t see much change in the diurnal swing.

This is the healthiest I’ve ever been able to keep any Acropora Millepora. I had turned my skimmer down when I was bottoming out nutrients and as of Monday they were 25ppm nitrate and .08 phosphate.

It is interesting the differences 1 acro like to the next. Green Slimer and WWC heartbreaker were growing better at lower levels while this Millie, Tenuis, and a few other clearly much happier at higher levels.

I backed off my ammonia dosing with the nitrates coming up but now I realized it’s probably due to turning the skimmer down and not resulting from the ammonia.

Tried to upload a video but the server won’t allow it and can’t pare it down in my phone.

Beautiful! Mille's have always been super hard for me to keep as well. Great to see that you've found success with them.

For the video, upload it to Flickr and just paste the url. That's what I do. Or I upload to youtube and post from there.

Awesome thanks for the tip!

*some* success. I had a nice pink Millie frag from Adam for a year before I got this one and it did squat while this solar flare exploded. So weird.

What is it you are doing when you’re turning down your skimmer? Are you just adjusting the airflow to lower the level in the neck?

So does more of the skimate collect on the side of the cup then? And the rest falls back into the skimmer. So in a sense your removing less skimate?
Yeah pretty much. You could say dryer in the sense that there’s less going in the cup and just concentrated sludge collecting in the riser.

So here’s what happens when you don’t touch a chalice for 3 years. About a foot around.

Not picture: the 1/3 of it I had to break off to get it out haha

I loved my halides, I hated the heat and the electricity bill :)

Just a Single 150 for the frag tank I figure any heat will help being it’s in the basement and I’m paying for a heater to run with way!

Snagged 2 of the Phoenix bulbs which people say can run 2 years so I’m set for longer than I’ll have interest in keeping the tank up probably haha

Got all the 3 viewing panels cleaned on the same day! Getting so overgrown here I need to pull the trigger on the new tank. I’m just going back and forth on it. Acrylic is half the price and IMO safer with a “of throwing stuff age” toddler but hesitant with how easily scratched they are. I’m pretty careful but I read maybe even bristletooth tangs grazing can scratch??

So my thought is go peninsula style as my walls are power blue and it would create really nice depth and brightness (see photo below) Then I struggle with how to make the external overflow end of a stand living room quality. I’ll build a stand as I can’t bring myself to spend $1000+ on one when I have a workshop full of woodworking tools. I need to make it lighter than the current one though but I think that will be easily achieved by not skinning it in solid oak this time haha

Anywho….
