You also want to monitor Magnesium, Calcium, and Alkalinity. These three compounds are essential for coral propagation as they aid in forming the corals shell.

Bingo. Regular water changes will help keep the supplemental elements in order, but you will want to monitor these three closely. Stability is key.

The coral in my tank was somewhat ho-hum, would be good one day, look terrible and possibly recede the next. Once I paid attention to magnesium, calcium and alkalinity, and started dosing calcium and alkalinity on a daily basis my coral began growing like it never had before.

Keep in mind, those three elements won't be consumed very fast until your tank has a somewhat heavy population of coral. The more coral you have, the more calcium and alkalinity is consumed on a daily basis and the more you'll have to dose.

As with anything related to saltwater aquariums, patience pays off. Add coral slowly, understand how testing works, pay attention to everything and go on from there.

Previous posts are pretty much spot on. You will want to get a Good set of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium test kits. Also a refractometer is a good thing to have as well.

Also get a good brand of tests. I just switched from API's CAL and KH test to Salifert. I find them much easier to read then the API ones.
