Using wooden dowels in the aquarium (1 Viewer)

So I've seen many people use what appear to be wooden dowels to build their rockscape - I'm interesting in doing something similar. Do you treat the dowels with anything? Like marine varnish them or something? Otherwise, don't they rot out? Do they eventually rot out anyways? Do you use something other than wooden dowels?

fiberglass driveway markers can be found at home depot/lowes and several other places.

acrylic rods, im sure there would be a local shop that has them, but i think the easiest would be to buy online.

acrylic rods can be heated and bent, but i dont think fiberglass rods can. you can even use PVC pipe if you can drill holes big enough.
 
Reason the fiberglass is the preferred is it is more rigid than the acrylic rod and you don't have to go to an acrylic shop to get it. The acrylic rod is too flexable if you doing a rather tall sturcture. The flow can make if sway back and forth. The acyrlic rod is ideal though for attaching the base rock to an acyrlic platform for added stability since the rod can be glued to the platform. With a good base this allows you to make some really off balance structures and not worry about it tipping over.

So I do use both but the majority of the structure is the fiberglass rods since they are stiffer.

Been doing this since about 2002 and have not had any issues with the fiberglass nor the orange/yellow coating deteriorating or anything in saltwater.
 
Fleet Farm, farm dept,sold as fiberglass electric fence posts.
 
Home Depot doesnt have them in the summer time..so buy them now!
