I need sand for my 300 DD project. BB reefs just don't do it for me. I'll need a larger grain size because of my flow requirements.
Any suggestions for reasonably priced dry sand?

I'm pretty sold on the "special grade". Small enough to siphon but doesn't easily blow around.

caribsea reef grade special is the choice substrate for me. Large enough you can still siphon the detritus and not worry about sucking up the grains.

If the goal is just to cover the bottom with about 1" and not attempting a deep sandbed then it probably won't be too bad $ wise. Likely 6 40lb bags should do it.

I would go with Fiji Pink, but it depends on how much is even available, and with the disaster that just hit Fiji it will be along time to get the reefs and stuff fixed.

I've got buckets of substrate that I had in my 210 and now is in my 500. I ended up with a lot more than I needed. Come out and take a look at it. I'm giving it away as long as you bring a bucket to swap.

I should add it is the bigger grained stuff.

Big fan of special grade dry. Cost effective, although you do have to rinse it. I have done Fiji pink shallow and oolite DSB. Siphoning them sucks (pun intended )

I like the look of fiji pink but it wouldn't stay in place. Always get mounding from powerheads. Ended up siphoning it all out and replacing with special grade.

I had the Fiji Pink in my tank and I had the Gyre x150 and never had issues with the powerhead moving the sand. Now my Diamond Goby on the other hand was a little jerk. It moved more sand around and buried my frags that I had on the sandbed.

I love my black sand in my tank, but its not for everybody. It's not magnetic and Acan Lord sells it for $17 a bag. Hard to beat IMO

Here is a look at black sand befor my tank cooked

I am also a big fan of the special grade sand. It siphons well and doesn't blow around easily.

I also love the special grade reef sand. I have tried the finer stuff many times, but always go back to special grade.
