I was looking at the tunze 6105 and realized that I wouldn't be paying much more for vortechs so my question is -

Should I get two MP10w ES? (Is this enough flow for an SPS 57g illuminata?)

Should I get one MP10w ES + one MP40w ES? (is this even necesary?)

Thanks :)

I've never owned vortecs but love my tunze 6105s. They are super quiet, easy to use and clean. I control them with my Apex so I have no experience with the controller nit hear it's great too. Customer service is also top notch.

I have vortech's on 3 of my tanks. I personally love the varied flow settings , and The space saving design. I think there fairly quiet, unless it's at full speed which mine never are. Tunzes are pretty sweet too! It's mostly personal preference.

Both have their advantages, and is a personal choice. Vortechs have a very wide flow pattern and never really needed to aim them in a direction. Even SPS close to them usually is fine. They are noisy if on full power otherwise not so bad. My MP10s on my display at the store you cant even hear them. Tunze are good also it just really depends what your looking for. I do like the controlability of the vortech the most though.

I think I'll go with the tunze afterall, more flow for the price (and I don't feel as ripped off, thet's face it vortechs are pricy)

I had both and they are both quality products.
Both have pro and cons and I think it comes down to personal preferences.

Tunzes look bigger in the tank and the power cord is inside the tank. I think you have more options where to place them in the tank as you do with the Vortech. If you have an Apex or similar you can control them very easily and change the flow patterns several times a day. When you have the light sensor also they will run in "slow mode" when your lights go off

Vortechs have the advantage the motor is outside the tank and almost no heat transfer in the tank. The MP40 have a real wide flow. The MP10 is more direct and not as wide IMO. With the controller you can switch into different flow modes manually. If you have an Apex you can get a separate module to do this automatically.
The MP40 can get quite noisy when running at full speed especially when you want to create a wave the ramping up and slowing down of the pump drives me crazy to be honest. One big negative for me is the "night mode" you can program. When you loose power even when it is for a couple seconds you will loose those settings and you have to program them again. Sometimes you even don't know the power went off in your house while not at home and if you don't check frequently your settings you never know if the night mode is still OK or if you lost it.

As I said it will come down to your personal preferences. Both are real good pumps.

PS. If your tank has thick glass you can have issues with the MP10 not holding very well. The MP40 is stronger and holds well on thick glass.

Fragtastic, I am interested in coming to see your store. I live in La Crosse, WI. Im probably 3.5 Hours away but I have a buddy who graduated from college in mankato and let me tell you something, There is no REAL fish store in La Crosse, Fish and pets in Rochester is pretty decent and I mean compared to La Crosse's options Fish And Pets is like a dream, so Im curious to see your store, im sure it is exsquisite.

I have been to fish and pets, it is pretty nice :)

If you have an android phone or something like it here is a free app that includes an LFS locater.

Really everything in this hobby boils down to personal preference, well almost everything...

some run GFO, some dont like it. Some run pellets, alot dont like them. some run carbon, some dont. some like T5, some like Halide, other hate T5, and others hate Halide.

What is perfect for someone and some applications is horribly wrong for another. The Vortechs are brilliant pumps, specially the new gen that dont get as hot. The Tunze's are a personal favorite of mine but I am actually in the process of evaluating new pumps for our rebuild, and Vortechs arent out of the question yet.

The Vortechs space saving design and wide flow pattern is quite nice, and the fact that i wouldnt need to upgrade my controller to control the variable speed on them is splendid. The ability to control the flow of the Tunze and its even broader flow pattern are great.

When your talking about cost, it really depends on the pumps your looking at. Tunze has a wide selection in the lower bracket making it more affordable, but its more affordable line is not controllable.

As far as i know the Tunze equivilent to the MP40 is the Tunze 6105 which isnt a whole lot cheaper than the Vortech especially when you factor in the need to upgrade your controller or purchase a Tunze controller independant of your current controller. Id wager the 6105 will cost more in the end.
