Why is there hesitancy in using vinegar with Kalk? (1 Viewer)

For me it was cloudy water and white stringy looking things on the pumps. The bacterial bloom that I had wasn't that big, but I've seen tanks with the rockwork covered and everything (bad news). Bottom line, just go slow with the additions of vinegar to the kalk solution.

htran, it's the same as your were describing at my house, either tank gets cloudy or a white film starting to get on the walls and rocks.

I do 600mil of vinegar per 20gallons of kalk which equates to 30mil per gallon and have yet to ever see a bacteria bloom of any sorts. I do also have a Tunze 6025 blowing directly at the area in the sump where the kalk is added and since then ( about 3 months or so ago ) I don't have any sort of kalk encrusting on the glass where it gets dosed. Prior to the change I'd have to scrap it off with a razor blade every month of so. I do believe precipitation is very minimal when dosing since the change.

About every 2 weeks I do add about 100mil of 2 part Alk to bump up the Alk a little bit. Likely could just add a bit more vinegar but I'm okay with the one time adjustments every so often. I also use time based vs. water level based so those days I evaporate more I do have to manually top off a bit over a 5-7 day period usually only adds up to a gallon or less of ro/di.

I should also add that I have a sureflow modded maxijet where my kalk gets added to the sump to prevent any accumulation. I haven't had any issues so far.

I think I'll give it another try with the vinegar with a lower dose. Last time I tried I put in 20mL/gal. Thanks David & Zibba for the info.
