55g turn-around (1 Viewer)

Why is the water always so low? Are you having trouble keeping up with evaporation? Salinity swings probably aren't helping if that's the case.

It was because I had forgotten to make some more RO water after the WC which was earlier.

We have actually created a little pump to take water from the bucket to the tank so I don't have to take off the light and then end up blasting them with new water. So I have been doing a better job at keeping up with it.

I'm going to start this update with saying I could not be happier with the progress I have made in such a sort period of time. Thanks to everyone for advice and for pointing me to things I needed most.

UPDATE:
EVERYTHING (except for the jedi mind trick monti :swear: ) are doing great! Although there is one problem I'm starting to come across, which is that I don't know how to clean the gravel anymore  there are so many rocks and corals that it is impossible for me to get in and siphon it besides a few spots. If anyone can help me with what to do that'd be great!

Now the corals:

I never believed people when they stated how fast they grow....this thing has grown at least 1-2 cm on each branch in less than a month, and has many parts where it is just now branching off another branch.

Red Pavona still doing great

Bi-Color Hammer doing good, it is a little retracted because my biggest blue legged hermit knocked him over.

And I would call this turn-around.... a success. :fish:

Those two last photos speak volumes for how things have improved. This hobby is a frustrating one but oh so enjoyable when you can be proud good results.

I also think I won my parents over now as one of my X-mas presents this year was a note saying that they would help pay for aquarium "stuff" in lack of a better word.

So now with the full approval of my parents, I can really turn this thing into something amazing and try and automate as much as I can before I leave for college...

Nice. ;)

You should show your parents the last 2 photos as a before and after....

Your tank looks really good dude, I'm jealous... Maybe if I would of had one tank up instead of constantly switching it would look half that good...

Also that darn water line man.... haha just kiddin

How far away is college? Will this be next fall or is it sooner than that? I wish you the best of luck. My first reef tank was when I was in High School and after I left for college my mom and sister became my sitters and while they tried the tank eventually didn't make it. I was over 3 hours away and only came home for holidays so the tank saw major neglect. If you have lots of time before then I'd get your family as involved as you can. Keep the tank looking great so they enjoy it, have them help with maintenance, and then when you are in college you can feel better knowing that they can take care of it between the times you are not there.

While I think this is some great advice, (as I'm going to be graduating this year) I'd be careful. It's always good to get your parents involved and thats what I agree with, but I know for me I personally didn't know what college I'm going too until December, and I'm going to be in Montana, and I know personally that even with the low maintenance of a RSM, theres no way I'd trust my mom to watch it for up to months at a time.

However, dude your not even a senior so don't sweat it until you get there, your mind will change 100 times to where you will want to go. Just sit back and enjoy what you have. This is something I never did and now I'm payin the price as my reef will be coming down here in about 6 months.

Thanks, I was glad to read that too (with the help of my parents as my mom has really "strong" cursive).

Well done!
Thanks!

I show them constantly, I even showed before and after of birdnest. They don't see it as well as I do, but with nothing growing for 3 years, I now notice the smallest growth :)

I have yet to decide on a college that I want to go to and my dad use to do a lot of the maintenance when I was younger. I'm mostly worried about if something goes wrong, they won't be able to react in time or accordingly. Btw I'm a junior so I got some time ;)

My dad knows about most maintenance stuff but when it comes to the fish and corals he doesn't have a clue. I am definitely enjoying this tank now and offers a lot of encouragement as I was beginning to doubt my care-taking abilities.
The comparison shots are very convincing, nice work!
Thanks, I just love looking at the comparisons
