TCMAS offers no opinion on what is or is not tax deductible, you need to ask your accountant. That said TCMAS is a 501(c)(3) corporation.

I do not personally know if a payment of this sort to TCMAS is tax deductible, and neither does Angie. (No offense Angie).

Let me rephrase, so I pay the $30 membership and now I am a member. Same question, what do members/tcmas benefit from closing the open classifieds?

I hear you lol... There's no benefit if we pay $30/ year and become a member. It should be $30/month so we all have to go to the meeting.
To answer your question. What benefit TCMAS got? NOTHING, except give you free foods, free drink, and educations when you're at the meeting:biggthumpup:

First off, I didn't read all the comments on here and don't plan to, but I think I get the just of this thread. People voted and others don't like the new rules. I have been part of TCMAS for a number of years. I held a meeting so I am guessing I am a full member?? I am planning on holding another meeting this summer :) This thread reminds me of one a number of years ago. Some of us have been around here longer than others and I know that people come and go and get in and out of the hobby and it is just impossible to please everyone!

In regards to paying for membership....$30 will pay for itself if you buy 1 or 2 things from the classified section. If $30 a year is too much then you are in the wrong hobby. If you don't like the rules there are plenty of other national reef boards to lurk on.

Wouldn't everyone benefit from the clubs increased budget? Nobody is forcing you to do anything and you not participating in the meetings doesn't hurt anyone or cost the club anything. You still can contribute to the club online the same way you have been. Except you can't post in the classifieds. It seems to me that the people who have a problem with this are the ones that want the deals we enjoy here but don't want to put in the effort to be part of the "off line" club.

The people that are paying just to get full access online would not benefit because they aren't attending the meetings to recieve the benefit. If they were they would not have to pay. Don't get me wrong, I support the club and when I go to the frag swaps I participate in the raffle even though I know I won't win because I know the money is going to the club.

Angie, I know that this will not change anything now but the subject needs to be discussed with more than just the few people that could show up. I believe that if the topics that were going to be voted on were more well known ahead of time, then you would have had a different turn out. My intent is to voice my opinion and see who else agrees so that come next vote, you know what to vote for. And so that these new ideas can be introduced and hopefully be brought up later.

I don't get why people are so mad about the payed membership, it's a great option for those who cannot make it to meetings, and helps support the club, I do, however, understand the angst over voting rights, what were you meeting goers thinking? If a person is willing to PAY to get into our club, they should be allowed to vote, I would like to hear the reasoning (if any) that was given to limit the voting rights.

TCMAS just earned $30, there's your benefit. . .

and they just filtered out the"Freeloaders" as stated by Hyper.

This isn't a commercial website, it is a club. Why are people even bringing the "Classifieds" into this? It has nothing to relate to the club. The BODs don't control it, it isn't an organized event, it is just a dedicated space to post FS and WTBs. So stop acting like the classifieds are "The Forums". Odds are that the people that would leave because it was gone would not be noticed or missed since they most likely didn't spend much time outside of that section in the first place.

You've asked this same question what, half a dozen times? People have offered their answers in at least 8 posts that I saw as I read the thread. I just don't think you like the answers, but its time for you to move on. Its fine to disagree, but you are now starting to spam the thread with the same basic question over and over.

None taken - I spoke out of turn not knowing what I was speaking of - I totally apologize and it will NOT happen again

I know nothing of tax laws ans presumed it was tax deductible based on us being a non-profit

I am a moron - please keep that in mind when reading my posts

Would you want some random person paying membership and then have a say in voting? I would feel much more comfortable knowing that other members got to see him in person before he gets the rights to change something.

Glad you're treasurer then :gay1:

The bylaws are what they are - to change them - you need in person votes - is what it is. There is no arguing this point

If you want to change how bylaws for the club are made/enfoced - that too requires an in person vote

Glad you're treasurer then :gay1:

You suck

I dont even see you

Is this thread still happening? :firecracker:
Popcorn anyone?

Seriously let it go, we're all good here, you have options, disaster averted!

"These aren't the droids you're looking for."

There was no real explanation to my questions until a couple post ago which the answer was "NOTHING" which is the only good answer to my question. And if you think there are benefits to the members by shutting the classifieds down, can you please list one or two? Don't say involvement since I'm paying $30 already.

Wow, overwhelming amount of opinions to read through! While I would prefer open classifieds, I for one am going to support the new rules and make some meetings to keep my membership active. If this doesn't work out for the club, I'm sure we can make future changes.

My only question now... with the extra fees, will there be a dance floor and open bar at all club meetings? Only kidding!

Now you are just selecting the answers you WANT to hear. No reason to argue further if you're going to cherry pick answers.

BTW the main reason I'm upset about this is because it feels like a small group (35-40 people) got together and decided for the rest of us (currently the site reads 2629 members) I didn't even know about the meeting cause most of that information is given out in the members only section. And I would like to attend more meetings, but I want to do so for the sake of being there not to obtain a membership. Now I'm not sure if its even worth it.
When I say active members that is what I mean. Those 35-40 people are ones who put in time to give back to the club on top of the BOD and moderators. I'm willing to bet more than 2000 of those members don't even visit the forum more than once a week, nor have been to a meeting in the past year. Once again this proves that there is more to TCMAS than the forum, and that face to face interaction is king.

Thats easy to answer - discussions went on for a few months online before the BOD meeting

If ya care to search for them - your welcome to read up on it

The members that showed up; voted on it after discussing it among st themselves at the meeting

I cant give you word for word for what was said at the meeting

We cant afford someone to do that - sorry

Plain and simple - what is being enacted 02/01 was voted on by the majority of the members - the BOD is just enforcing it

benefits to the club:
- Increases value of the sponsorship, possibly bringing in more sponsors. Sales by sponsors are more visible to nonmembers.

- small fee 30$/year can add up quickly when you have 10 or 100 people opting for this method of membership. Every little bit helps.

Member benifits:
- Members are better protected from scams and other problems. I would feel more comfortable buying equipment from someone who is a TCMAS member, than from someone on Craigslist.

yes, these changes do reduce the number of buyers and sellers. It may encourage meeting attendance. If you care enough to get to a business meeting to vote, you should be active enough to make a meeting, join the BOD, or host a meeting.

If you don't like it, wait till the next business meeting. You might change your mind by then, otherwise you can vote to have it changed back. If you were at the meeting, voted against it and it still passed, you have the right to complain I guess.

This is looking like the biggest thread of 2013, and i just wanted to be a part of it too. :biglaugh2:
