As a current newb, I can tell you that I came to this forum as a freshwater guy, wondering what it took to be a saltwater guy and how much it would cost (the curse of being an accountant). I read all the articles, some good posts, got excited by what kind of livestock and corals I could eventually have. I learned a lot about this hobby just from the classifieds section. But if at that point, someone would have told me I had to pay to see them or attend some meetings before I even had a tank yet, I would have said forget that. At that point I wasn't even vested yet. I actually got all the stuff I needed to start my 30g off the classifieds, and I know some of the members benefited from it. After running my 30g for a while I was hooked and posted in the classifieds section that I was looking for a 180g tank. I was contacted by a BOD who helped me and my tank is on order.
I realize and agree that the members should have all the say and I respect that, but the point of this post is to say that I'm one guy that benefited from having an open classifieds section. I think it’s a little harsh to call me a freeloader just because I wasn't vested in the hobby yet and I was doing my due diligence.
Also, not all us “freeloaders” on the fringe are lazy, too cheap or whatever adjective you like. Between traveling for my job, my kids, my kids’ activities, church, hunting, fishing, soccer, basketball, and my wife’s two jobs I have a lot going on. I’m not saying you should cater to me and I’m not playing my violin, but I am defending saltwater hobbyists like me who are trying to juggle other responsibilities and hobbies. IMO if only 1 out of every 10 people that join the forum for the classifies becomes an active member, that's better than none!
this is the same way i was feeling when i read this as well.
and not all of us have a LFS in our areas . and some of there prices wouls scare an entry level noob. i see allot of people defending the position of the bod when the members actually made the decision but the harshness by some of you with your comments is childish.
some are just trying to get there feelings understood and arent conveying them well while others trample on them.
the active membership has the ball in there court it is up to us to participate or watch and see what they do with it and what becomes of the forum as time passes.
{ just a thought }
with everyone being in such far places ( big city and all) has anyone considered chapters? as it might help with bonding more people together in a smaller group of hobbyists. would encourage the club aspect more amongst each group and then the chapters could take turns hosting to defray costs a little as the club grows.
:biggrin:the iowa club down here i joined is doing that and it seems to be working quite well as we are developing groups of people that are 2hrs away from each other but 30 to 90 people in each group are meeting regularly:beerchug:
i will keep reading articles people post on here and ask questions if needed. hopefully things get ironed out and nobody decides to close expos to members only either.
{ just for someting to chew on}
the last thing i bought off the classifieds turned int a friendship and a 7 hr conversation about the hobby and trials and errors the day i picked up my new tank. its always nice to talk to someone on the phone and then meet in person and be assured if i have an emergency i can call and ask questions:violin:
northside reef i like your aspect and angle to this as well, but 80% of people just starting out are not going to be able to give back right away except thru participation at events, most will be at the hard end of the learning curve of the hobby or be vested in fresh water and making the jump to the darkside. hopefully everything works out in the end.
it was just easier for me to make friends thru the forum classifieds then comming to a expo.
and speaking of that will there be an option for a avability/classifieds post for members to display goods to potential non members prior to the expo? or will all non members be forbidden from seeing what is for sale till they show up?
