So I picked up a 65 gallon setup a few months back but as algae started to grow on the glass it started to fill the scracthes near the sand bed making them more obvious and making the OCD in me look for a new setup. So... I picked up a 75 gallon reef ready tank, stand and canopy on Craigslist, they were using it as a freshwater setup......

I picked up 40 pounds of pukani from brs a week and a half ago as well as over 120 pounds of fiji pink. I used some of my sand and lr from my 65 to seed it, hoping to expedite the cycle/curing.

I also added 2 brs dosers this weekend and set them up for calcium and alk. (Right now I am using the dosers with microbacter7 and vodka to get the bacteria to get a move on it)

I also added a brs carbon reactor with gfo and zeovit (installed on the outside side of the stand for room in the sump)

Also, picked up a 30 gallon glass sump/refugium awhile back and put it into the stand, added miracle mud, some of my live sand, lr rubble, chaeto, red macro, added a nano powerhead and bought a small shop light from menards with an led grow light.

The plan for the lighting is to use my t5s from my 65 gallon once everything checks out to move it all over and get rid of these pc lights. I will have to make some sort of frame/stand/legs for the light as its a 36" light for a 48" tank. Any ideas here are appreciated.

My wife and I are going out of town until February 15th so the thought and hope is that by the time we get back home the tank will be cycled and ready to go.

There will be quite a large load in the new tank (I do significant weekly wcs)

Stocklist:

Tiny blue hippo tang
Small scopas tang
Pair of oscelarris clowns
Scooter Blenny
Lawnmower Blenny
Green coral goby
2 firefish
Randall's pistol shrimp and Randall's pistol shrimp buddy
Black ray shrimp and Randall's pistol shrimp buddy
Mandarin goby

Corals:

Large Frogspawn
Multiple zoas
Digis
Green slimer
Clove polyps
Decent size monti
A very large acan
Small acan
Kenya tree
A couple ricordeas

I will be getting rid of a diamond goby once things move over. I am getting sick of uncovering my frags multiple times a day.

So, here's the long winded details on my build. There not be much to update for the next 2 weeks but in 2 weeks (fingers crossed) the tank will get moved over completely. I am looking for a couple of pieces of LR to swap for the flat bottom marco rocks you see in the aquascaping, it just doesn't look natural at all to me. Also, I am hoping to grab an apex controller as well when we get back.

A hippo and scopas will get too large and may fight, why not stick with a smaller tang such as a kole or tomini?

I actually would be more than happy to have a tomini or kole or both but these were both "inherited" by a friend as well as a couple of the corals. I am on a beer (old, stinky, expired, warm natural light) budget. If anyone has one to trade I'd be more than happy, in the time being these guys have some time to grow out of the tank.

I figure with a large load I wanted at least half of them to be very small so I could have more life

I also do at least a 25% weekly water change if not closer to 50% already hoping this will allow me to keep a larger load

Well, just go slow with the stocking and be prepared for some possible algae issues. Also, watch those tangs for ich. They might be pretty stressed in that size tank. Not much room to roam. Never tried that many fish in my 75g, so I can't say it won't work, but I'm pretty sure it will be challenging. Good luck!

Thanks! I will defintely have 1 of two updates: pure elation that it works or eating humble pie knowing it didn't.

Ha, well I've made plenty of mistakes myself in this hobby over the years, so I won't give you a hard time if it doesn't work out! 75g is a nice size tank. You'll enjoy it once you get it dialed in.

I just had my parameters run. Looks decent. Can I get some input/confirmation or a no about doing the upgrade?

Thanks!

Nitrate: 10
Calcium: 560
Alk: 11
Phosphates: .25
Ammonia: 0

Thanks in advance for your help!

I think it should work. I agree it's a heavy fish load. The Tangs being the only concern (as they get bigger) Ich concerns from lack of space. I think it should be fine though, seeing as you're doing large WC's. All your pic links are broken (FYI). Also not sure on what skimmer you're going with, I'd just make sure it can handle the heavy bioload.

Can't wait to see some pics as you put it together.

Thanks so much for the info and advice. I'll be getting rid of the regal tang and going with only a scopas for now as far as tangs go. I'll use a different site for pics. Any suggestions?

Thanks again!

Mike

Photobucket, is a good one (free). (not sure what you are currently using). if you're using a phone, you could purchase tapatalk from the market (forum app). It'll host your pic for you, and you can visit this forum, communicate, post pics etc. I believe its only a couple dollars. Thats what I use a lot of the time.

I think your small blue hippo/regal will be fine, I had mine from the size of a nickel and now 4 years later its maybe 5 inches and doesn't seem to mind the 75. May have to find a bigger home (or maybe already have one ;) ) But there is no reason you can't enjoy it for now.

+1 totally agree....... wait for Tang police... I think I hear the sirens. I'm OUTTA HERE! :cop:

Transition done! Thank God!

Had to do a few mods: used a 36" t5 Tek light on the 48" tank. Also, I'm hearing a buzzing from one of the ballasts I believe any idea?

I moved 1 clown, all the corals, the green coral goby, scopas tang, lawnmower blenny and scooter blenny over. Gonna trade the clown pair, diamond goby and likely the regal tang.

Anyone know what kind of coral this is?

Next steps are waiting for my new fish to get here on the 18th. Add a few corals and hopefully soon pickup a good controller.

Thanks again for all the help!

Mike

The buzzing could be an older ballast starting to wear out. A lot of times they run and run for a long period of time before they eventually fail. I think if you're planning on leaving in Feb for a couple weeks, I would recommend replacing it before you leave. Just for piece of mind.

I love your rockscape. I've always loved the large, stacked scapes. Especially when it starts to get a bunch of coraline growth.

Thanks for the advice, now only if I understood what to do to fix it. The ai vega fund has started as of today. I'm wondering if my corals will have sufficient lighting with only 4 bulbs on while I am away. Thoughts?
