Why? At best, a durso can be almost as quiet as a herbie. It won't quite match a herbie because the sump end will always be a little noisier. At worst, a durso can be a lot more fiddling and noise than a herbie.

Hands down, the herbie is the better choice IF you can include an emergency drain.

The Durso was already built when she bought the tank so I figured why not use it. It's not glued to the bulkhead so can easily be swapped out for a Herbie.

Fine to have a preference just so long as you have tried both and decided it's right for you. If never actually tried then that wouldn't really be a preference. There is something to be said for "If ain't broke don't fix it" just so long as your noise and salt spray isn't an issue. I would dare to say it's pretty rare for a durso user to switch to herbie and not like it. Most never go back. To each his own though more than 1 way to skin a cat I suppose.

Thank you for the input guys, I really do appreciate it! A quieter setup will always be a better setup in my opinion, especially since the tank is going to be right outside of my grandma's bedroom. I think we might test run the durso when we do the tap water test. If it is going to be too noisy, then we'll be one pipe away from a herbie! :biggthumpup:

Remember though that air bubbles don't behave the same way in freshwater so from a noise and bubble spray perspective it may not be a good test until you have salt running through those veins.....

I wouldn't worry about it, changing out the Durso for a Herbie will be a 2 minute job. You have a nice brand new schedule 80 gate valve from SWE as well. Fresh water test to make sure there are no leaks in the bulkheads and that the tank and stand aren't going to fall over, then it's go time.

Awesome Angie, the loc line that I have keeps breaking when I move it.. Even after putting it under hot water. Must just be old.

There will be progress being made on this bad boy for a while. We're working hard on it, and I want to get it right the first time!

Okay, apparently I forgot to update. Well, there will be another one coming soon. I have been doing some resource gathering recently! A couple water jugs, some dry rock and sand from Roushy, and egg crate from guy9smiley2! This means I'll be trying some aquascaping out to see if I can get away without having to drill (unless Angie wants to make a trip down my way Wednesday night for some evening aquascaping).

I've washed out some of the sand already, but have also gotten my original 29 gallon (for sale) back from an ex that was holding some of my belongings hostage and this tank has some old sand in it as well that I will need to rinse. I'll probably do that tomorrow and document my work!

I am still not satisfied with the cleanliness of my tank. There is old coraline algae on the overflows that I just cannot seem to get off. When I cleaned it the first time, vinegar soak didn't really seem to do much. How can I get this off without gouging the plastic with a razor?

Oh. And what should I cut the egg crate with?

Probably need to step up with some stronger stuff than vinegar. Muratic acid start with a 10 to 1 and see how if goes may even need stronger. Probably just get it moist such as soaking with terry cloth towel to soften it up for 30minutes or less. No need to fill the whole tank up just to clean the overflow.

Thank you DG! I do have Muriatic acid and was thinking about using it, but wasn't sure on how it would affect the plastic overflow or the silicone.

Just use a side cutters to cut the egg crate. If you don't have one can try scissors?

How long did you let it soak? I leave mine for 24 hours then it wipes right off.

Oh. And what should I cut the egg crate with?

I do still need Locline, mine is broken, and I don't have any other.

Egg crate is cut and placed, and tank is cleaned! Pictures are taken, but too darn tired to update with photos.
