If I have the choice, I would like to use a captive-bred species so that at least that would slightly lessen the load on my conscience about the live animal testing. But yes, I am going to avoid a damsel. I don't want to have to deal with catching one of these demons afterwards (plus, if whichever fish I choose survives, I'd rather keep it than have to subject it to more stress by catching and relocating it, and I wouldn't keep a damsel).

With Dr. Tim's the params don't get that high during the cycle with just one fish. My chromis was cruising around the tank having a great ol' time. It never was stressed out.

Clint, she is wet. You must have missed a page.

And Kolie - I'm not upset because I'll have a fish in during a cycle - I plan to finish the cycle before I add a fish. I'm upset because I'm subjecting a live animal to a test to determine whether or not my tank will support a live animal with the silicone that I used in the tank.

Oh, forgot about that. ;)

How about you put a damselfish in the tank in an acclimation box? That way it is in the water, but it can't get away when you want to catch it.

Valid suggestion. I might do that - though I'd still prefer something that was captive-bred. Damsels aren't captive-bred yet, are they?

Well, I got a chromis from Jay about two weeks ago. She made it just over a week.

Thing is, she was perfectly fine for the first three days. All the horror stories that I read involved everything dying overnight or in the first 24 to 48 hours. I'm lead to believe that perhaps there was something wrong with her. Jay and Matt have both said the same thing. After they mentioned it, I realized that she was very small and drab looking when I got her, so perhaps she wasn't doing well before-hand and just hadn't shown obvious signs...

So... Perhaps a hardier clownfish?

The last 3 chromis I put in my tank didn't survive and all looked healthy, They lasted a week, one disappeared, a couple days later the other and then during a recent tank mishap, I lost the third, some can't keep 'em, I've heard a lot of people say this about them, so I wouldn't start thinking it's because of the silicone, sorry I wasn't following your thread, why is the silicone in question? And if Jay says it's not I'd trust in that, he knows his silicone!:greenguy:

Blue Green Chromis? I have horrible luck with them... Had around eight in a 180 and now there are three. The three are very hardy, but the other five are a mystery.

I've heard a lot of that. I've done pretty well with Chromis for the most part. The reason the silicone was/is in question is that I accidentally used a silicone that has been known to nuke tanks. But like I said, Jay said he uses it ALL the time without any issues.

Simon, I'll be working on that soon. :) Been cleaning it up a bit the last couple days since lack of time had been preventing decent maintenance. ^.^

What kind of silicone are we talking here? With a mold inhibitor? If it's 100% silicone then you are always fine, to my knowledge all else I know about are the kinds with mold inhibitors and I have heard those to be bad for aquarium use. Remember when buying silicone just buy the bottle that says aquarium safe at the bottom, when in doubt you can't go wrong with that!

You needn't tell me. I've heard it a thousand times since. But it isn't always fine. 100% silicone doesn't necessarily mean the entire contents of the tube are 100% silicone. I used GE Silicone II in white.

I just got finished reading your thread, ARRRRGH! Been there done that and well were on the subject I have the same awful stand, such poor design, mine has the same stupid gap, I could build a better stand and have in the past! Anyway I see the silicone you are talking about, if Jay says it's o.k. it'll be o.k. However for future reference don't buy the stuff in caulk guns, the smaller tubes they sell at HD etc will actually say aquarium safe and I believe they only sell those in clear, either way you are good, it's done and it looks nice, get some fish in there!

Definitely sounds like there was something wrong with the chromis and not your water.

Whenever I get a fish I make sure they are active and their fins are sprawled nicely. If they hold their fins close to their body constantly then they are not as healthy.

When people have issues with chromis it is because groups of chromis kill each other off, they don't just die magically (unless they are ill). Especially when there is only one.
