3 Foot Nano Tank (1 Viewer)

Nov 2015 FTS

The FTS was awesome as it was one of the first times that every fish was out today.

Plus a nice picture of the Sunburst since I haven't taken a picture of him since he was added to the tank awhile ago. He was really shy for about 2 weeks but is now out swimming with all the fish. And the next is the Venustus checking out the Midas' house. I'd like to think that the Midas is going "Oh My God" as he sees this beautiful fish.

Getting a lot done at work, I see.
You have a very nice collection of fish and corals; great colors and shapes!
I'm amazed that you've managed to keep the green monti under control.
How's the Phoenix frag coming along?

Yep I get bored some days waiting for client approval on projects. Or the fish are just more interesting than what I should be doing :kackle:

The monti grows quite fast. I break of a 1/2" or more along the entire rim every few weeks to keep it from getting any bigger. The main coral thats a problem is that Blue Ridge which is encrusting into all the other corals on the top of that rock. I have to take a toothbrush and screwdriver to that guy all the time to keep it in check. The Setosa on the other side is going to see the same aggressive treatment soon too.

Phoenix is really getting bright and more golden. Its right above the angel in the FTS. Its just started to encrust so its going to be awhile until it plates out enough to make frags.

Hows the Nautispiral for you?

Absolutely.
There's days when I come home from work and I think I'm going to get a bunch of things done before the end of the night, yet I usually end up watching the tank for the better part of the night.

Hows the Nautispiral for you?

I just glued it into place last weekend, so hopefully it will start to encrust soon.
The color is still a little pale, but I'm planning on making a couple of additions to try and boost my red colors soon.

First time reading this thread, gorgeous tank... I'd never get anything done at work if it were in my office....

Ok some news from the tank.

I picked up 2 corals from Carl at the swap. Red Dragon and Hawkins. Two corals I always want in my tank but never survive. The smooth skins are my kyrptonite. I hadn't tried them for over a year and wanted to give them another shot. I also picked up the gold torch I was after. Not super bright yellow like the Aussie version I had awhile ago but this Indo version has smaller tentacles and more heads that match the scale of the tank.

The day after adding all the corals everything looked great. The third day after the swap my Hawkins RTNed and there was nothing left besides a while skelly and some strings of flesh blowing in the flow. I removed the Hawkins skeleton and now say I'm never trying this coral again. I went into work on Friday to feed the fish due to the long weekend. In the location that the Hawkins was mounted multiple surrounding corals were dead or dying. I started to lose my spongodes, my cyphastrea, and red digi. They are not fully gone but may or not recover. My Phoenix frag from Dr Foster and Smith RTNed and was completely toast. I dipped the bare skeleton in a iodine solution and placed it in a back corner of the tank.

Today I came into work and the red digi is still losing polyps. The spongodes, and cypha seem to have stabilized with about half the coral remaining. The phoenix skeleton I placed in the corner MIGHT recover. I saw the faintest 1/4" patch of fluorescence when the tank was 100% blue. There still might be some surviving flesh but its going to take probably 6 to a year before it looks like anything again.

The fish are all doing great otherwise.

Ugh!!
Ever since I lost my Hawkins a year ago, I have not had any luck with new frags of the smooth acropora corals.
I'm not sure if smaller frags are the reasoning behind their quick demise, but until I find a larger piece of 3" or so, I'm also staying away from them.
It's interesting that the Hawkins caused neighboring corals to also RTN. Any ideas or research as to a reason?

Ugh. I quit acros for this reason.
My only guess as to cross contamination is the small water volume.

Come to rehab, quit acros. I am almost through all of the steps of the program! Quitting acros might be the best(or worst) thing I ever did...

Thanks all. I'm still addicted to the sticks. Though there are probably only 3-4 true acros in my tank, the other SPS are montis or birdsnests so they are usually much hardier.

As for the RTN to neighboring corals the only things I've found through some brief googling is that the polyps and tissue go into shutdown mode due to an auto-immune trigger or viral infection. This infection or triggered response can be passed along to neighbors who then do the exact same thing even if its a completely different coral. The Hawkins might have gotten just stressed enough to go into meltdown mode and told all his nearby buddies that they should jump off the bridge too. Its just strange that it didn't show any stress the day of or 2 days after being added (Monday). But on Tuesday the coral was completely gone and by Thursday and Friday all the surrounding corals starting biting the dust.

Another strange thing is that the red dragon, which to me seems like a very similar smooth skin acro, should have stressed out at the same time but has been fine so far.

Sorry to hear about the acro troubles! Hopefully the red dragon and others hold on for you.

BTW that Sunburst Anthias looks great :beerchug:

Have you looked any further into this?
I may be experiencing the same phenomenon with my torts.
I first lost the Toxic Green Tort from adding the soda ash into the water flow which directly affected the coral. But within these past two days, the Cali Tort is a complete loss and my big Miyagi Tort may be gone by tomorrow. :bawling: The odd thing is that the Oregon Tort is looking great.

What is confounding is that the Forest Fire Digitata is looking the best it has looked in the past three months; and other acros are showing new growth.

It's just the group of torts on the left side that are doing this.

I have not researched it further.

My red digi is completely gone along with half my cyphastrea. The phoenix did survive but its Very very tiny and will take a long time to heal.

The thats weird that a spike affected only a select species of coral. More likely it killed one coral and then that shutdown response got sent to other nearby corals, why it skipped the digi for you I have no idea.

Your brain: :) Your brain on acros: :mad_3:
Any questions?
Go to rehab

They were just placed in the tank for comedic purposes. I wouldn't dare turn them on.

Thank you for running the contest Chris and having these as the prize. It was fun and very generous of you!!

Now if someone would like them you can PM me or Jason if you want them as partial payment we can chat :p
