as far as sumps go, i like to go with the largest sump i can fit in. more water volume you have the better off you'd be IMO. plus a larger sump gives you more room for upgrades/ease of maintenance

DC Pump is planned. VectraM1, Neptune Cor, or Jebao DCP were the ones on my radar. No powerheads in the display.

I totally understand the bigger the sump the better but I also need room for a top off container and small bits of equipment and media. I just thought external looked pretty cool.
 
Been pretty impressed with the Vectra. Even at its lowest setting it moves decent amount of water. Once can split up the return into 2, or maybe even 3, and crank up the Vectra a little more and get some decent flow in the tank.

i have never had an external pump, so cant say much towards it. just think it'd be overkill in a smaller system. plus it takes up space where you can fit in a larger sump :)

another idea would be to move the ATO container out of the stand and place it on the outside. you can have a smaller cabinet made to hide it or you can get a nice acrylic one and not have to hide it. that way you can have a larger ATO container that would need less refilling too often.

just throwing out some ideas :)
 
How much evaporation do you experience in a day?
More appropriate question... How much evaporation do you experience over the weekend?

I ask because I'm wondering how much top off water you need to have on hand to get you through your time away from the tank. If you're only needing to keep 1-2 gallons of top off available, try keeping the reservoir as small as possible. When you do decide on a reservoir, get two of them and you can quickly swap them out versus having to fill one inside the stand.

I prefer internal return pumps; mostly in part to having a lesser risk of a leak happening inside the stand. And if a leak were to develop, the water would travel back down the plumbing into the sump.

Now to combine these two thoughts...
Could you maximize the sump space to include an area in the sump to place the reservoir of top off water? If you have plenty of room above the sump that is not getting used, placing your reservoir in/above the sump would maximize the interior footprint of the stand. You could place an acrylic stand inside the sump that a reservoir could sit on and possibly be attached to something to limit any tipping of the reservoir; something custom made for a specific reservoir.

Those are my thoughts, at least.

Totally get the leaking part. If there is a tiny drip I'd want it to travel back down the pipe and into the sump. If this did happen it might be harder to catch and notice for awhile but at least it wouldnt cause a huge mess.

I currently use a 1 gallon jug for my top off. It lasts me about 3 days. I dose kalk with my top off water on a timer. Keeps the dosing the same and consistent. Using a small container also limits effects of a huge overdose if the timer got stuck on. I plan to have the same 1 gallon container, or a matching acylic one around a similar size, maybe up to 2.5 gallons as it would go a whole week before it needs to be refilled. There are times during vacations and Christmas break that I often have to go back into work or have coworkers feed and refill the container. Having others do less limits accidents.

Right now this is the direction I'm probably going. The decision is 12" tall or 10" tall.

My current system uses a 10 gallon sump filled about half way. When I cut power it fills to about 90% full. So 5 gallons of water inside, 4 gallons of back siphon. The 10" version of the Series 7 is 11.4 gallons so I think I'd be fine. I could run the sump at 6" or maybe even 7" and still be able to take on the full back siphon. I'm also now using a checkvalve that will cut the amount I lose in half. I will still keep space available for the rare chance it fails though.

Finally ordered a custom Series 7 Sump from ZeroEdge. Now the waiting game for the Neptune COR. Been waiting a whole year, a few more months won't kill me, right?

I'm starting to get envious of these custom sumps; my 40BR is starting to look like a POS.
Did you request the colored acrylic to be Neptune Systems orange? Your color scheme works perfectly with the black walnut stand. Well planned design!
 
They make all their sumps in orange which is probably why I was drawn to them in the first place. I also liked the design of the offset sock. I sent them measurements I had to meet and they adjusted all the parts to fit. If I went with a different company I would have had to request orange and make a lot of adjustments most likely. Since it was already being custom sized I asked for the cord hole and dosing bulkhead holes.

I was in contact with Brett, one of the main guys over there, about 2 weeks before I paid to see if they do custom sizes.

From the time of payment it took about 3 weeks until mine was finished and then a few days to ship it.


How has your ZeroEdge and Senergy Reef sumps been working out for you?
