acharpenters downsize and refurbish (1 Viewer)

Do you have any way to protect that powerstrip from getting splashed? Maybe just a little acrylic cover to keep salt spray out? Otherwise, it looks really great. Get 'er wet!

The power strip is in the same spot I had it in with the 20 long sump and never had any issues

With changing the sump to a 29 gallon and leaving the baffles the same height as what they were in the 20, there should be little to no splash issues as the glass is taller.

Outside of that, I am planning to add some egg crate covers to the left and right side of the sump to also help cut down on splashing as well as provide area's to set things like nets, tongs etc (not to mention the added assurance that nothing falls into the sump, nor can anything jump out if I need to segrate any fish).

The middle area will have an acrylic plate with an area drilled out in the middle for the sump light

What vortechs do you have in there? MP10's? If so, are you going to get the wireless upgrade kits to link them?

Correct - MP10's

At this point I see no need to upgrade to the wireless - I have other upgrades I may do before then like an APEX controller, possibly a cone skimmer.....gotta get this thing up and running before I start upgrading anything though

My tunze's switch profiles based on the lighting and the feed mode. Can you control your mp10s from your iPhone?

Jk. I see no reason to do the upgrade. The feature would be nice but not worth the cost.

The question is.. can you on your iphone control your mp10's while in the court room with out getting thrown out by the judge? ;)

I don't go to court for what I an doing right now. But, I'm sure I can do it from the crapper.

now you just need a web cam so you can verify the changes ;)

get any water in with that salt yet?

You should know better. Desert reef tanks require LEDs.

Ya'll done, or did ya get a room and continue on??? :gay1::gay1:

What is the ball valve on the return for? If you have your power outage antisiphon setup right, there will be air in that pipe when it is turned off. A single union where the ball valve is is sufficient. Then you can get the pump/sump out without cutting any plumbing. I can't think of a reason for the ball valve.

Yup, check and check.....

That odd ball valve off the return is to simplify my water changes.

Stick a bucket in front of it, turn off the return to the tank, open the odd ball valve and TA DA.....5 minutes water changes via sump and pump fed.

Good looking setup. Can't wait to see it with water in it!

Thanks dude - trying to get everything right this time around. I know thats not possible, but this is a huge upgrade from what we had!!

OK, either your power off siphon isn't right if it will back siphon down from the tank that much, or you are only going to remove about 2 gallons of water in the return chamber. Something doesn't seem right.

The ball valve in the middle of the picture above looks like it is headed back up to the tank. You've got another pipe cut off to the side.

I have a maxijet with a hose on it. When I want to do a water change, I put the end of the hose in the drain and drop the maxijet in the tank. No buckets and no getting wet.

The valve in the middle of the stand off the return is for the water changes.

It would originally only to draw off the return compartment and yes, I would only get a couple gallons

The pipe (with the valve in the 1st chamber next to the skimmer) runs through the length of the sump along the bottom. Therefor when I open that pipe, I get an additional 2-3 gallons out of the compartment the skimmer is in

I am only doing 5 gallon weekly water changes so it works perfect

I'm talking about the one in the middle of this pic.

It looks like it is going vertically up to the tank. Is it just an odd angle?

quick matt, ask her why her baffle has slits in it. hard to hold water back when theres a hole in your wall ;)

Ahhh - those are just dry fits, we have a peice or 2 to pick up and complete it - I see what you were referring to and yeah, no worries.

Will be posting a pic of the plumbing before we solidify it......
