Achilles Tang DIY 300 curved Tank Build (1 Viewer)

what did you use for your background, that looks really good.

From page 2:

"I laminated 3/16” blue to my ¾” end panels this provided color and a means for creating overflows and the four Tunze wave boxes"

From page 3:

"The back is going to be blue. However I seem to always buy creatures that like to hide behind rock structures and so forth. So the back of the tank has a removable 3/16” piece of blue acrylic that will be Velcro’d on."

Now thats awesome :biggthumpup:Great job and can't wait to see more.

Now you got me thinking UP GRADE:greenguy::greenguy:

Jwedll - I did actually abandon my acrylic piece on the back and install this background. I emailed this guy directly and ordered a custom sized piece. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230342687480&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123 I also installed it with this stuff which really makes it pop. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=18280

Screwtape - Yeah they have some room to put it into perspective the Achilles is 5" long and that Brown cap in the back ground is so big that when I got it, it would not fit in a 5 gallon pail we actually wrapped the top of the cap in wet newspaper for the ride home. The depth of the tank is still decieving in the corners. It only appears to be barely two feet. Then if you watch a fish swim away it starts to feel like there is some depth.

Reeferbeefer - Yes the Achilles Tang in the Avatar is the one in my tank. I got the fish from SF they pm'd me out of the blue last Friday. I got home late from work about 6:45 saw the pm come in on my phone. Told my wife there was a change of plans for the evening and off I went.

that backround looks really good. I think I might check that out on my next one.

Well three weeks on the Achilles and other than the expected flair up of some minor ICK from the stress of rapid changing surrounding and settling into its new home all looks well. Added some Selcon to its diet and up the feedings in the tank to two a day, beside it algae clips, and the Ick back off right away. Oh and I added two HUGE cleaner shrimps to the mix this last weekend. They have established a nice cleaning station in one of the tunnels and there is a continuous precession of fish moving through one by one. I can never get enough of that cracks me up to watch every time .

So as some of you know I lost the sting ray and two fish since the tank start up to the built in wave boxes. The sting ray actually formed the shape of a half circle and swam through a ¼” slot to get in. Still scratching my head to that one. I have been messing around with a few adapter plates and other things over the last month. But Sunday I had an epiphany and made a simple spring loaded tube basically out of some pool suction line and the results rocked! The range of motion on the tunzes is endless, there is less vibration noise now during speed changes and they are one hundred percent fish proof! Yes I am very happy with myself. Of course every great idea I have I eventually find somewhere on the web that it has been done already by someone else. In either case here are some pics of my latest adjustment to my endless gadget project.

In October my wife daughter and I went to Disney world for 8 days. I tried to explain to my wife before we left that the tank comes before everything else in our lives but she wasn’t buying it. :lookaround: Anyway I left and the Achilles was fat and healthy I came back to sever case of ick. After two weeks of trying to nurse it back it passed one evening. After 12 years it still kills me to see a good fish go. They always seem to wait until I walk into the room to do the dance of death. I may try for another in the spring but the shipping season on them has passed IMO until then.
Thanks for making me relive that painful memory… Joking

Sorry to hear about that, not much you can do about that though except maybe never take another vacation again. I bet the family would love that one too.

How's the rest of the tank coming, coral etc? New FTS maybe? :)

Sorry to hear that! It is tough to see a fish you have pass even after having it for a few months let alone that length of time.

How did the rest of the livestock fair in your absence?

Screwtape - Not too much has changed since my last tank shot I am in the process of designing a hybrid volcano / RK2 skimmer roughly 5' tall I hope to get started on it in Feb. The orca is doing OK but I'm feeling the need to complicate things. What can I say I'm addicted to gadgets there I said it.

Oldnemo- Since my wave box adjusment above all livestock is fat and healthy. None of the coral or fish showed any signs of stress while we were away at Disney.

Thats too bad you lost your achilles. Mine just went into the DT for a week now after the 3 wk quarantine. Did your achilles develop any ick at all? There was not sign of ick in the Quarantine period for mine. Fingers cross in the Display.

Well, as long as nothing else is going on except designing a brand new skimmer we don't need any updates.
