Adam G’s 8ft Rimless Reef (1 Viewer)

Tank looking great Adam.

You need more Anthias. Purple Queens would fit in real nice in there :)

Thought I would post a quick update on my tank. Unfortunately one of my eight lyretail Anthias finally turned male. He went rogue and killed off all but two females. So I went from eight down to three Lyretails in about three days. He also took out one of the small Bartletts Anthias. So I have six remaining. In all this chaos I lost all of my Wrasses as well. I don’t know if he killed the wrasses directly by harassing them to death or if The raised aggression level in the tank caused the Achilles Tang To get aggressive as I noticed some aggression from him while all this was going on. He’s extremely sensitive to everything and when other fish get aggressive he tends to get stressed and aggressive. The good news is no issues due to stress for him. He is doing great.

Everything kind of settle down for the last three weeks now and all is well fish wise. I actually went up to New Wave and got an Aptasia Eating Filefish and a Kole Tang. Put those guys in last week and they were accepted into the school with no issues. Everyone is doing great.

I would really like to capture that aggressive male lyretail and pick up 7 more females But I am just worried when one turns male again I will have problems and I don’t wanna go through that. Think I will be happy with my two new additions and start adding wrasses back in over the winter. For now I think I’m just gonna let everything settle in and keep an eye on everybody.

On the coral front everything is doing really well. I had mentioned in my July update video that I was getting STN on just a couple of Acros. I also had some burnt tips on a couple colonies as well. I tested everything a few weeks ago and all levels were spot on. Nitrates and phosphates read undetectable as always. I don’t believe that I have no N&P in the water column. Pretty sure they’re getting eaten up by my algae turf scrubber. I continue to get film algae on the front glass so I know they’re in there. Just to be safe I cut back my light cycle on my turf scrubber by several hours and I have been feedin heavier.

I also noticed that my temp was getting a little higher than I like so I added a fan and have it set up on Apex to come on when temp gets a half a degree higher than normal. On these warmer days now that we don’t have the air on I was getting a rise of a couple of degrees and I think the temperature fluctuation is what was causing the STN. It has only been a week since I got the temperature down and stable and things have been looking way better. The corals with the burnt looking tips have made a full recovery and just a matter of days.

I added a few more Lobos to the tank as well. Got another bright pink Lobo from OldNemo. It was just about the same size and the exact same color as the one I have. Put it over on the other side of the tank to add some more pop over there. Also took advantage of the Labor Day sale at new wave and picked up the coolest Lobo I have ever seen. It was called a rainbow Lobo and has bright pink mouths with a blue and green in the body. Also found a beautiful blue Lobo with lime green mouths. Also got a beautiful blue and green Bowerbanki. I placed it right behind my bright red one and the contrast is really cool.

Have a couple of spots open for some new SPS many colonies that I will be shopping around for this fall. Really want to make sure I have traced the cause of the burnt tips and STN before adding any more SPS. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the temperature stabilization as well as cutting back on my Algae Turf Scrubber hours Will do the trick. Hoping a little more and N&P in the water column will make a difference as well,

Will be posting up a September update video here soon. Kind of excited about all the new Lobos. Who would’ve thought I would be taking up valuable Acro space for LPS. I guess that is part of the fun. So many beautiful corals to choose from in our hobby these days.

Need some pics of these Lobos you speak of!

Switched to Tropic Marin Classic Balling method. Have been using BRS 2 part for many years but have read great things about TM so wanted to give it a try. I am noticing a ton of growth and very happy corals. Took a video tonight to document the results.

I thought I read the A B C combo will have your salinity or calc levels or something rise over time just based on the chemistry of the ABC. Have you noticed anything?

No, not yet. I check it once a week and do a water change every 2 to 3 weeks so I will keep an eye on it.

Looking great! Need you to do a video of the tank for the Facebook page before the cyano comes back ;)

How do you like the Achilles?

How do you like the Achilles?

Achilles is a pain in the *ss quite honestly. He is getting more aggressive as he gets more mature. He just took out my Kole Tang by slowly beating him to death. I was able to get the Kole out but it was too late for him by the time I managed to catch him. I have a Regal Angel in quarantine right now and I am very concerned that when I introduce him in a few more weeks it may be a blood bath.

That being said I do love the fish. I have always wanted one and am glad that I have him. He has been with me almost a year and a half now. I got him months before I even set up this tank. I don’t think I will get one again but am glad to have had the experience.

I do not have the equipment or the skills to get a good video of my tank. However, anyone that does is more than welcome to come down and get footage for the Facebook site..

It has been 3 days since my last cleaning and I am happy to report that the Cyano has not returned as of yet. There is nothing more discouraging than doing a 3 hour tank scrub down with 70 gallon water change only to come home from work the next day to a red carpet over your white sand.

What a battle it has been. I know it is most likely not over but I am happy to have a break from it for a while if nothing else. 2 rounds of red slime remover back to back after a full manual removal last Saturday and as of Wednesday morning not a trace of it. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I keep reading that you have to fix the problem, not just remove the symptoms of the problem (the Cyano itself). However, when you have 5 times turnover to your sump, clean filter socks every 3 days, oversized skimmer, Algae Turf Scrubber, 4 MP40’s plus returns giving high circulation throughout the tank, a UV with new bulbs, new T5 bulbs, and everything else you can think of, it is hard to know what other problem to fix.

Having had a reef tank now for 20 plus years I guess I have resigned myself to the fact that Cyano is just something that has to be dealt with. Very frustrating but here’s to hoping I have won the battle!
