Blennieluvr’s 120 LPS dominant build (1 Viewer)

Maybe, since I added more fish or maybe, I have been slacking on maintenance a bit lately. (I have extra family in my home AND it's basketball season.) Even though my phosphate has been reading 0, I have been noticing some nuisance algae in the tank and the glass needs cleaning more frequently. I have a BRS reactor and some GFO and charcoal that I could easily throw on but, how will I know how much media to use and when to change if my readings are already 0? When I ran GFO on my last tank, I texted phosphates weekly and changed media when my tests showed it going up again. Maybe I should just run it a day a week or something? I welcome discussion. I know I could just do what I think and see how it goes or look up a past discussion. However, this post gives a tank update and will possibly lead to some discussion which I have been craving. 🤓 Also, for reference, I have a small fuge which is going bangbusters (I throw out about an ice cream pail of chaeto almost weekly.).

On a side note, I know many of you run algae scrubbers. I would be open to this but, as I said, I already have the reactor and media and I wonder if an ATS is a good idea since my setup is mainly LPS. It seems often scrubbers clean things up too well. I don't want to swing things the other way and have to start dosing nitrates.

I'm still after all these years NO expert, But for me the spring time and warmer weather ALWAYS brings on some algae issues for me. Same with having lots of people in the house for a extended period of time before , it may raise the CO2 in the tank somewhat which may trigger the algae.

You know, I believe I have seen that with the weather, as well. I hadn’t thought about the extra people affecting the tank. Good point.

I wouldn't run the gfo/carbon one day a week. You would want to drain the reactor so that the water within doesn't foul.

You could run the pump on a timer or controller outlet and run it 15/30 minutes several times a day, just to keep that water from stagnating

Good call. I like that idea.

I got to see this tank a couple weeks ago. It looks great. I have to give a thumbs up to Camie for having such a nice tank in the middle of no where(JK I love their place). Thanks for having us and keep it going.

Thanks for stopping by when you were up north. I know we are “out there” but we love our spot. I got inspired after your visit and have spent some time on tank projects.

Yo yo Cammie! Drop some pics! Your tank is faaaaabulous!

This is one of the few home tanks I’ve seen. I feel fortunate to have some livestock from your system as well.

How are the Reef Camp additions doing?

Thanks for your kind words, Josh. I am excited about some recent additions. I picked up more frogs, hammers and acans to fill in the gaps. Also, I rehomed a large fish and my flower nem so I felt more comfortable adding a captive bred mandarin. Here is the latest pic of my tank. Mind you, it was not taken with the idea that I would sharing it here.

Last eve hubby told me he was giving up hope on my trusty TEK 6 bulb fixture which I have been so pleased with. I have to hurry up and decide whether to stick with that and buy another or change things up a bit. I welcome discussion especially from those who are or have been T5 fans.

For accountability’s sake, I want you all to know that my winter project is to finally do something with my scape. This rock work is basically the same as when I started cycling this tank and threw some live rock in 2019. I never intended it to stay that way.

If you are considering LED the Neptune SKYs give a coverage and look similar to T5's.

Currently, I am leaning toward Davy Jone’s geiseman aurora T5 hybrid. But, want it to fit into my floating canopy. Thanks for the tip in case this doesn’t work out.

Scape, scape, scape, scape!

Your fish right now... 😁

Too bad about the lights. Bummer having to replace gear, especially when it’s also a change. Hope that can get worked out in quick order. Would hate to see your tank unduly suffer.

I am also insanely excited to see the new rock work. You had a cute little spire together after the last NMRC meeting. Blow them rock piles up and elevate your game!

If you like the look of T5's and want to stay with them, I understand. I just purchased a T5 fixture for my 32gal tank that isn't even set up anymore. Before buying a new T5 fixture, make sure that bulbs are available. Their supply has been hit-or-miss over the past year but they seem to be back in stock now.

However, I have been really impressed with the looks of the Neptune SKY fixtures on tanks that I've seen firsthand. If I decide to change up the lighting on my 120gal, those are the frontrunners.

Lovely tang by the way.

Yeah. I've noticed some issues with bulb availability. I've had to order a different brand in the past. I hope they continue to be available going forward.

I hope to check out the Neptune SKY lights in the near future. I've not had the pleasure of seeing them in person. They might be my long range plan.

Thanks for commenting on the tang and not the cords running throughout my tank. :) I've been rearranging things lately and it's a work in progress.

I bought an aquatic life hybrid, my choice, and two viparspectras, on a recommendation from a friend, for over this tank. My corals are responding well, so far. I delensed the vipars and, so far, the settings are whites at 1% and blues at 20%.

Also, I've had some fish changes. I rehomed my hogfish so I could keep a mandarin. My kole passed. :( The mimic was definitely a food hog and, in hindsight, I should have put nori in a couple of places in the tank. I thought feeding every day would have been enough to bring it back. Sad day. And, I had lost my corris wrasse a couple of months ago. It hit my hand when I was working in the tank and I couldn't find it anywhere so assumed it went for the sand bed. Wrong. This left me with just a pair of domino clowns, a blue mandarin and the boss mimic tang in a 120g. After MUCH consideration and a post about fish commitment issues here on this forum, I purchased a tailspot and midas blenny. They are going to be great additions! So cute! I have a friend who is working on conditioning a leopard wrasse for me. Merry early Christmas to me!

One thing I noticed with my naso was how much weight it puts on eating nori. Way more than protein based foods.
