BlindSwordsman's K.I.S.S. 90 Gallon Mixed Reef (1 Viewer)

Don't be hard on yourself your tank if I recall is fairly new and we all have issues... well speak for myself...)

Coral wise: Some things are doing fine. Some things are not. Just the usual stuff with this one!!! :) I moved all monti to the 40 gallon tank. I rearranged a few things. I was checking on here to see if anyone wanted to trade any red goni with me but I got no bite. So, I fragged my green goni. They do well. So, I fragged my pink and red ones as well. So, I should have a lot more goni. No full tank shots at this time, but I got some miscellaneous shots of stuff. ...

Fish wise: The fish are fine. I added 11 royal grammas back then. 2 died so I have 9 left and I still have 9. I ordered something and got a McCosker's wrasse but it died after a few days. I'm not really planning to add more fish anyway.

This tank is doing okay in general. I added some small green stylo. The goni seem to be doing well in this tank so I fragged them out in various sizes and placed them in more places around the tank. There is no red stuff but there is a bit more algae buildup on the front glass than I would want. I'm thinking the Radion light that I use for supplement might be the culprit. The chaeto had been doing fine before. I then connected the outside air to the skimmer, and the chaeto melted. I then disconnected the outside air and added in new chaeto. The new chaeto was going well for a while, and then it just melted again. So, I removed the chaeto completely. So, right now, there's nothing going for this tank except the skimmer and some sponge, and the skimmer doesn't even seem to skim anything either. Oh well! :D .. Here's the current full tank shot.

The artist himself. Looking great Ken.

It's been 2 months since my last update. There's nothing too major going on. I added a few small frags here and there, and moved a few things around. Here are some quick top down shots just for the heck of it :).

Ken, what really baffles me is how you mount so many corals. I have a hard time mounting more than 3 acros on a melon sized rock.
Maybe practice is the key to success?? 😄 I literally spend hundreds of dollars on super glue at the Dollar Tree store. I usually clean out the super glue section every time I'm there 😄 ... But seriously, it is probably harder for you because you deal with SPS and they are heavier and your colonies are quite large. Usually that will take time to hold them in place for the glue to set, then I would use epoxy to secure them further to the spot.

Ken love the pics, tank. Really the craftsmanship and thought you put into it. Not one square inch missed yet no real clutter. Nice job x2 by myself and Pat..
One question we're does KISS come from..?

Thanks! I would say my tank is not really 'all that'! 😄

K I.S.S.: This is a bit of a joke. This was what @Reefer Oz called my kind of system. .. 'K I.S.S' is the abbreviation for 'Keep It Simple, Stupid', if I get that correctly 😄.

If someone is looking for some dramatic news to read, here is one. On Monday, I said: Everything is good. I took some pictures and posted here. My cousin from CA who came over for a visit took some pictures and video on Wednesday and said: It looks good! ... Then the next day, my rainbow stylo closed up, then the rest of the stylo, birdsnest, ... Then on the next day, my goni, then other LPS like hammers, frogspawns, ... There was nothing that I can say I did out of the ordinary. I did not add anything or do anything unusual! Things are currently looking mad. I did some water change. That didn't improve the situation. So, I've been doing a few large water changes lately. Things in the other system are fine, just not this 90 gallon tank. The only difference between this tank and the other one is this one is/was connected to outside air. I didn't spray anything outside though, but I don't know if there was anything leaked in. The other thing is: I did use Flatworm Exit last month to get rid of the flatworms in the system. Things looked fine afterward, so I can't be sure if this is some side effect lingered from that, but that was a few weeks ago. One other thing was: I made a water change the day before this started, and I wonder if the salt at the bottom of the bucket had something bad in it. ... In any case, I can't pinpoint what the issue is. At the moment, I kind of running out of patience and I'm starting to pull things out and dip them with iodine, then glue them back. So, there will be a lot of dipping and re-gluing things. I probably re-arrange a few things along the way. ... This sounds so much fun, doesn't it? 😅 .. OK, I gotta work on the dipping now!

This might go against the Ken principles, but maybe a little proactive carbon incase something icky is in the water? Hope it comes around, that’s stressful Ken.

I actually have activated carbon running passively in this system. When I noticed the change, I even replaced it with new one then.

In any case, I'm still dipping. Instead of putting them back, I've decided to put some of them in the frag tank system for further observation instead. I still have plenty of frags of the same kinds from the frag tanks that I can use to regrow for this tank if I need to.

It's quite okay really. It's a bit annoying but I'm not really stressed out. I guess I'm used to the up and down in this hobby already 😁. The good thing comes out of this is: I'm actually feeling pretty fresh, ... Well, because I need a lot of fresh water for the water changes, so I've been doing a lot of water filtering, and as I usually utilize the dirty water to wash my stuff, I've been doing A LOT of washing. I even wash some of the stuff twice. So, yeah, things are pretty fresh around the house now! 😂 ... And oh, I even changed out the water filtration system's cartridges and stuff too.

Another day, and more thinking about this 😁. It's too much to redo the whole thing. I could, but with many fish I have, it'll be tough for them. But I'm thinking I should replace the sand (or as much as I could) as I think it's a potential risk. I've ordered some new sand and it will be here in about a week.

I'm considering 2 options:

1) Leave things in the tank and wait for them to recover (IF they will recover in there), and gradually replace the sand. But there is a chance that there is something lingering in the tank and instead of having the situation improved, it only gets worse.

2) Dip with iodine and move all major corals out over to the frag tanks, then replace the sand. But I also feel the frag tanks can not handle a certain of corals yet. So, there's a chance I make them worse there.

.. Hmmm ... I think I will go for option 2. I'll replace the sand when it arrives (a week from now), see how things look by that time and re-patch this tank again. It is probably a good time to clean up the tank a bit, reorganize a few things, trim things down, declutter stuff, so .. Oh well, it might not be a completely bad thing😁.

This year is not really my year. Nothing seems to go smoothly. I have projects to complete and I don't really need another one 🙄. My house meeting is scheduled for December and I hope things will recover nicely and don't look too patchy by then 😁. .. OK, enough whining. I need to mow my lawn and get things going 😆.

I already dipped and moved all LPS, except a few, to the frag tanks. I think they'll be okay. Same like digging stuff in the closet out to reorganize, I will end up with extra stuff eventually 😆. I will wait for the new sand to arrive, replace the sand, and will start the tank patching when I see fit. I probably will not put some of the colonies back, to keep the tank less cluttered. I found something like the rock arch in the back too thick and low, so I built a new one yesterday to replace it. So, there will be something new, something old eventually, nothing borrowed 😁.

Edit: I spoke too soon. I found more troubles with the rest of the corals so I decided to pull them all. I might consider pulling out the fish and redo the whole thing as I'm not sure how badly this thing is and I've pulled pretty much everything out by now anyway 🥴. .. More coffee and music blasting for me!! 😆

Just for record keeping I guess: New sand is in, and some change to the rock work. I'm a bit undecided about the middle one. I might redo that part. .. Instead of 'good looking tank/corals', it is back to the basic: 'The rocks', again 😁. I probably leave it alone for a while. I'm back to taking some classes again this fall, and with work and stuff, I might get myself a bit distracted from this. Who knows?! 😁
