on Tuesday i bought two royal grammas from Discovery Aquatics. i requested the smallest and the largest grammas that the wholesaler had. the fish came in perfectly sized, and they got along fine together in the same tank. the female was slightly damaged, but she will heal. scars make no difference when they are spawning.

for now, i have them seperated in quarantine. i did this because of the injury on the female (smaller fish). when she is healed, i will release them into the 37 gal tank with the flame angels. when i do this, i may also add 2-3 mollies to add chaos. im not sure how the flame angels will react to new fish in their tank, so ill be prepared for aggression.

right away the male royal gramma is eating pellets. the female seems less interested in food, but would rather stare at me at all times. they are both very shy still.

here is a picture of both fish in their breeders nets.

Cool, good luck. Are they easy to breed?

EXTREMELY easy to breed, not so easy to raise. they will have small batches of eggs hatch nightly from their nest. small and big = pair.

dwarf angels are extremely easy to breed as well, its just getting two that arent both males. these will produce 1000-3000 eggs per night if fed well. small and big = pair.

well, it seems they are about the same difficulty as raising clownfish. im really excited about these two fish now.

an update: i released both fish into the tank with the flame angels. the larger flame angel became aggressive until i rearranged the tank. things have since calmed down and both royal grammas are out more. they are both eating pellets and frozen food.

keep us posted on your project. Is it good to have 2 species you are trying to breed in the same tank?

shouldnt be an issue, as they spawn differently. royal gramma will have a nest that is out of reach from the angels, while the angels will spawn and the eggs will float at the surface. if i plan to collect angel eggs, id be right there to collect them as they collect at the surface, leaving minimal time for the eggs to be consumed by other fish in the tank.

after the flame angels get used to having the royal grammas around, there should be no interaction between them either. though i expect chaos to erupt when i move the clownfish pair into the 65 gal tank. aparently dwarf angels and clownfish dont like each other from what i have read. minor torn fins is hopefully the worse that will happen in this case. i plan to move my 3 pairs of fish into the 65 gal tank, then slowly make this my reef tank.

well, all differences between the angels and grammas have been settled. they are getting along peacefully today and they all are eating aggressively. no torn fins either, worked better than i planned.

now i just need to get around to cleaning out the 65 gal tank to make room for the fish.

well i have had a freak setback. out of nowhere and aparently for no reason the male royal gramma died. my best idea of cause of death would be internal parasites, though its body has always looked fine. perhaps it had something affecting something other than its intestinal track. anyways, i can keep guessing all day on why he may have died... if anything were to die due to water quality, id expect the flame angels to die off. if it were aggression, then why didnt the super tiny female royal gramma die? the males fins are flawless, so i doubt aggression in this case..

dumb thing is that i ordered S strain rotifers, and was planning on having the royal grammas moved into a dedicated 10 gal tank for spawning.

anyone have a proven male royal gramma they can sell me? if it is building nest, its a proven male. nest building is generally just gathering bits of algae and stuffing it into a hole.

other royal gramma died today. i removed a decoration that i added a few days ago. i dont know its history, so perhaps it was exposed to something toxic...

time to do some water changes and hope for the best. the flame angels are showing stress. their colors have lightened up.

lost a flame angel this morning. im down to 1 fish, the larger flame angel. im moving it into a new tank with fresh water straight out of the reef tank. unless its a disease issue, things should turn around for it.

It sucks.Recently I lost every fish in my tank too in 4 days a couple weeks ago. I'm going to leave it empty for a another month or two because I can't see why that would happen unless there was a bug in there.
