Durand tank build (1 Viewer)

That’s all very interesting. And makes sense. I keep reading up on keeping nitrate way higher than I had ever imagined. And have never really chased numbers in the past or even cared to pay much attention. It does sort of drive you mad lol.

with the changes I’ve made and the monitoring I’ve been doing I’ve noticed a lot less stress on the newly added corals. But still only sps and lps. if this trend stays the course I might try adding some Zoas again. I’m surprised by not seeing any reaction that I can say I see from any of the corals during any of the add on‘s or changes. So that’s a positive. And other than the bubble algae still around. No other nuisance algae. 🤞🏽
Personally, my thought process isn't around chasing numbers, but more about never letting them hit zero. I 'd rather be on the higher side than the lower side always. Because on the higher side, nutrients are 100% available at all times. On the low end, it's constantly bottoming out then becoming available over and over, which prevents nutrients from being readily available at all times, thus stressing out the sticks.

Keep in mind this is just how I think it works, I have no personal scientific backing to support my theory :)

That was sort of my though as well. Never to bottom out and keep elevated or in the higher range. If I would not have been having the issue I was seeing with adding new corals I probably would have never even cared to have gone down this road. I wonder what ill obsess over next 😂.

Been a hot minute, figured id update. Been dosing No3 and it has been all over the map in terms of stable. I adjust a few ml up and we skyrocket, drop the dose down a few ml and barely move or it drops. Ive been testing wed and sun. Got tired of testing daily. With all that. Po4 has dropped to .03-.05. Lower range when No3 is high (30’s). Kalk stirrer is plugging right along. I can now tell at about day 12 or 13 I need to add more to the stirrer as I can see PH slowly start to drop. I’d like to see if I can find away to get it to be more stable. I hit 8.3 about noon but then it slowly drops till about 12am where it then flat lines while fudge light is on to 8.2 but then drop after fuge light turns off at 6am to 8.1. Then at 10am we start the incline back up. This is all very nit picky I think in terms of wanting more flat or stable but its such a small about I dont think it probably matters much.

Now that I seem to have gotten my po4 in check but still working on No3 a little I think im going to try to add some more zoas again and see if I can get then to live. Have a few areas I would like to get some color or fill in and this feels like the path of least resistance. LOL

Trying to change up the fish a bit as some may be able to tell from wanting a fish trap. I dont seem to get any PE on any sps. I assume it’s from the angel. Even though I love the pop of color and character of this fish I think I might be time to move to along, and the damsel I do believe are killing off the Chromis. It’s the only fish I see chasing them along with my newly added clowns. The clows can stick up for themselves but the Chromis are not doing so well. Will give a few shots at getting them out, but in the long run may end up in a defeat and just let it be 🤦🏽‍♂️.

Enough rambling for now I guess. LOL

Your tank is looking great! .. What is that coral on the right of the frogspawn/octospawn, above the orange psammocora? Is that a green montipora digitata? It has very interesting shape so I'm not sure! 🙂

Looks great! Love the little lemon peel (I think that’s what it is)

thx, I do not think it’s a digi,. Not sure what it was called. But it’s very fragile. Sort of breaks off easily.

Thanks I love the lemon peel. Just wish it would stop nipping at corals. Lol.

It could be the Elkhorn Montipora Hirsuta??

Got a notification today wet contact alarm went off. Checked on the tank and the bottom of the stand was wet. Luckily apex alarm worked. It turned off return pump and set off the alarm And then sent an email. After checking the tank. Kalk stirrer hose end clogged and caused stirrer to overflow a little. No damage and it was not much water. But now I need to change up how the stirrer drains as well as hook dosers up to apex so if this happens again the apex can turn off the x1 dosers.

On a good not ive been watching how my co2 scrubbers been working. Now after gettting it finally dialed in I can show all the moister that has collected in the scrubbers Moisture collection jar.

Quick trip to menards and we should be good now. No more 1/4” ro line. now 1/2” line should not clog🤞🏽 while I was in the sump removed a basketball size clump or cheto, and swap out co2 media. Should all be good for a long while now image.jpg

Looks like that neptune sky (I think that's what it is?) is doing its job! Nice. And yeah switching to the 1/2" is a must, weird how the previous owner willingly switched it to 1/4"

The gro Light is working really well.
Mount is crap but what ever. I think the previous person maybe did a diy kit or something on the stirrer. I had no issues until yesterday so not sure what that is about. But should be all good now.

I may be reaching out to you in the near future if I cant figure out the formula for making diy no3. I received my packet of powder last week but I still have the premade so waiting till that is just about gone before switching.

I noticed my PH had not been rising as much during the day as it was. Saturday I decided to change out the Co2 media. What a difference.

Put in a new on demand water heater Thursday so the ro unit had to be moved. This morning got it back up and running and upgraded from the triple DI to the triple di saver.

Does that MP10 wet side really boost the flow rates of the RODI system?

Made my little chaeto rack this morning. Looks like it will cut down some of the light bleed and hopefully keep some of the little strands from floating around.

While I was working in the tank this morning I decided to remove the locline back flow preventers that I had decided to try to lower the amount of water leaving the tank when I turned off the return pump. Well there was a nicely tight round ball of chaeto jammed up in them. I never even thought of this to be a problem. Thankfully I found them before I had any sort of issues. So I removed them all together since they didn’t really work anyways

Other than these fun items the tank I moving right along. Have plans to set up my old 40b in the basement and use a frag tank since everything is getting to that point where I’ll need to start trimming things
