Durand tank build (1 Viewer)

Went back and looked at some pictures from first setting up this tank and it appears I’ve been slowly loosing all my green mushrooms. Its weird. I have some orange ones on one side and they seem like they are growing. But these green one on the other side of the tank have been turning white and disappearing little by little. I had a rock fully covered when first brought over but now there is only one good looking one and 3-4 white small shriveled up ones left. There is one higher up in the tank that has been growing. So now I’m curious if it’s a flow thing or a light thing or maybe both. But something seems to be affecting some of the softie corals. 🤦🏽‍♂️

The good always seems to come with the bad.
Beautiful fox face has been taking care of the bubble algae I can see. That’s the good. The bad. 2 Favia colonies are now no longer. Gonna either need to figure out more food for the fox face or maybe rehome if it continues to go after corals. I placed the left over Favia I had loose on grow out plugs in the sump.

The sump frag tank continues to grow algae. I’m going to try picking up a turbo snail this week and see if that helps but I think my plan is going to be to toss the zoas and broken sps chunks I put down there and turn the light off. It’s a great place to put broken things or safe heaven for corals being chewed on but long term not sure I want the extra work if it’s going to continue to fill up with algae.

Another great reason to have a build thread. You notice things like these and can go back to see exactly when a certain event happened with your tank!

Just get another tank for LPS :)

Ive been hyper focusing on my hammers for the last few months. Mostly since I notice my Po4 was bottoming out. I started adjusting the flow down thinking maybe I was just putting too much flow in the tank. Since doing so Ive noticed or at least it appears that all my sps just started to stop growing. Not dying or bleaching or even change in color but not growing. I see some of the Millie’s dont have the polyp extensions they once did as well. Im taking this as a sign to increase the flow back to what it was. All 4 mp10’s now set to 50% reef crest from 7am-9pm in anti sync mode from the pump across from one another, then slowly drops to 15% constant For the remains hours.

Top off reservior is suppose to arrive later today so be excited to get that in and pull the bbq coal bin out. I really hopefull this is what was causing the zoa and hammers to be what they are today.

For fun an updated iPad shot.

Dude not good. 😬

The iron and zinc tell me rusting magnet or some foreign metal.

The tin (that level was enough to kill acros for me) tells me soft pvc tubing leaching.

Correction. I didnt have acros dying from tin until it was above 60 mg/l.

interesting. I ordered the test but have not sent it in yet. How would you even address some of these findings? Seems like RODI system would and should catch a lot of these no? Especially the metals.

I know. Sort of maybe explains why all my mushrooms are disappearing.

I pulled out my prob holders, glass cleaners, and sicee nano pumps. Went though the sump and didn’t find anything else. No foreign object floating around that I could find. Mp10’s are all that is left for magnets in the tank. And I swap those out regularly so not sure that would be it with out me hopefully noticing

I also pulled the top off reservoir out and swapped for a 2.5 gallon Menards bucket. I should have a new one hopefully soon. I was suppose to get it last week but it had a small leak and then my guy went on his honeymoon (how rude right 😂).

Not sure what else it could be. The return line is a braided line from menards. So maybe that could be changed??

I googled chaeto gro and that has iron in it. I’m dosing that daily. Could that maybe contribute to it?

Water came back clean. Think it something I’m dosing or equipment related.

Oh yeah I’m wondering about that ATO tank you were using that you said made a funny smell. Various plastics and tubing are the #1 culprit.

Oh and yeah you’reright on with the Chaeto grow product there.

I’ve inspected all the magnets and I’m just not seeing anything obvious. They are side locks and the tunze ato magnets that are in the sump and they all look good and don’t drip from any of the seams when I pull them. I let them drip on a white towel to dry out and no funny colors. So I don’t think that’s it. I’m leaning towards this ato reservoir I was using maybe. I don’t recall any issues with any corals until after I put that on. Does nots explain the zink level. Iron I can blame the chaeto gro.

Researching online I see some people blamed the screen top. I have one of the diy kits and not sure if maybe this is doing it? I don’t see any corrosion but maybe…..

Yeah Slide Loc and newer Tunze magnets are solid I wouldn’t suspect them.

Are you using a TLF feeding ring by chance?

I gather you’ve opened the wet side to check the MP10 magnets as well?

No feeding ring. Plank is in the sump and dumps above the return pump.

Magnets I just cleaned maybe a month ago and set aside. But when I took them apart last to soak in vinegar I did not see anything that looked obvious. I’ll check the ones I pulled and cleaned last week but those didn’t show anything when I removed and cleaned but was not looking either.

Found a rusty screw on my sump pump in my ro tank in the basement. But this is the same water I had tested that came back clean. I still pulled the pump and will order a new sicee utility pump from brs. These look like they can stay in water with no metal to rust.

Oh Dang, nice find.. I am not xferring water that far.. only about 25' which you saw.. But I am using this.. but I am also only doing 5gal week :)

Thanks. Think I’ll need something a little stronger. That one is only good for 7.5’ it looked like. I don’t know if the screw is the problem as I had this water tested and it came back fine but I don’t want to risk it.

I had a test done last year from old tank. Those numbers did not have zink it iron and the only thing I can think of that is different is the tank and the ato reservoir. Going to start with the reservoir and give it some time to run through the hoses and reactor and then maybe send out another sample. 🤞🏽 it’s not the tank 😬

Did a large water change. Reinspected all the magnets. Pulled the chaeto cage and live rock from Refugium. Didn’t find anything. Going to empty the kalk stirrer this weekend and will clean and reset just to make sure there is nothing in the kalk slurry. Screen top looks good. Didn’t see anything there to be alarmed about. I’m lost at this point.

Sucks these reports take so long to get back. I’ve done two water changes and have changed my doses since sending the test out.
