Thanks! I am going to be adding more rock to the display tank. I am in the process of soaking some old live rock in vinegar. I would use muriatic acid, but since I live in a townhouse I don't think dumping that down the driveway would be looked upon nicely. I'm just trying to eat a tiny layer of the rock, so the vinegar should do the job.

The additional rock I want to add still has a little green film on it like some type of algae, and while it is soaking in the freshwater it seems to have almost a chlorine smell. I have put some prime in the water a few times over the last few days. Anyone here know if vinegar will be a good enough soak? I just want to remove a little of the rock to make sure I don't leach phosphates, or have any left over aiptasia.

Thanks!

I finally bought an Apex for my tank. I ended up going with the Gold version, and I also ordered a Neptune DOS pump. I wanted to set up an automatic water change, and have been looking at the Apex for a long time. So in the next coming days I will be setting it up, and getting my water change project under way. For now I am planning on using the DOS to do the pumping, and I am going to use 2 35 gallon Brute Trash cans that I already have for my mixing. I have an old Ehiem 1262 Pump that will be in charge of mixing the water.

With all that said, I am trying to come up with the things I will need for the Apex to alert me of certain things. I am trying to figure out what float switches will be best. Any suggestions? I am thinking I need two 4 for the mixing station. Two in each will keep track of the water level in the tanks (high water level, and low water level).

I am also trying to figure out what floats I would need in my tank sump itself. I am going to be running my current ATO which is a Tzune, that is going to be attached to a Spectrapure pump. Currently I have the 20 gallon tank next to the display tank, and I want to just pump the water up from the basement where my mixing/Rodi tanks will be. So I am just thinking a float switch as a back up incase something fails with the osmolator it will shut the tzune down.

Anything I'm missing? I appreciate any helpful information!

Congrats on the Apex! That will keep you busy for a little while; it's an interesting system. If you're not aware, we have a thread where we share access to our Apex Fusion accounts to get ideas on programming and use cases. Apex Fusion Sharing

Thanks!

Yup, I also bought the tank there. I was just up there yesterday, and they had a 120 sitting there with a stand. I am kicking myself for nothing going that size when I bought.

Nice i have been looking at the 40 breeder sump they have, Li does a great job on those. your tank looks great! and yes I think everyone wishes they went bigger after they get things going. I was in yesterday as well and saw that 120. that's my next upgrade!

Let me know how that sump is. If I can find a way to get my current one out of my stand somehow without moving the stand I want to buy that large sump from SWE.

They look nice.

He did a great job building them. I am really happy with it.

The new toys:

Just have to find a way to route the ro-lines down to the basement. Just need to work on figuring out this programing of the Apex.

I don't seem to have access to this part of the forum yet. Might be because I am new. I am planning on making one of the upcoming meetings. I was able to get everything all set up last night, and today. I will post some pictures here shortly. Thanks for all the help guys!

Here are some photos of the new automatic water change. They are not the best photos, but they will do!

Hi all,

This is my first post. I moved to the Minneapolis area about a year ago. I just came across this forum, and thought I would join. During my move I made the great decision to upgrade my tank! I had a 29 gallon setup before, and I made great progress learning how to get my first corals to grow. Things were going good, in other words nothing was dying. I settled on a 90 gallon reef ready tank after some research. I wish I would have done a 120, and should have because bigger is always better! :agree:

The new tank has been running since April of last year, and I am getting great growth this time! The few corals I had in my 29 gallon made the trip out here from Michigan, with no casualties. I have since added 11 new specimens. I will give a brief descriptions of my first setup, and what I have now:

The 29 Gallon had:
20 Gallon sump
1 filter sock
Mag Drive 5 for the return pump
Coralife Super Skimmer 65
Hang on the back overflow
Aquatic life 4 bulb T5-HO light
2 Hydro Nano 240 powerheads

The new 90 Gallon:
30 Gallon Long sump
2 filter socks
Ecotech Vectra M1 for the return pump
NYOS 160 Skimmer
1 Ecotech MP40QD
2 AI Hydra 52 lights

I will upload some photos tomorrow. Thanks for reading!

Welcome, I'm relatively new to the forum here too. I was more active on Reef Central, but it's nice to have a local flair.

I will have to post a couple new photos. I am out of town until tomorrow, but I will get the posted. I moved the DOS down into the basement by the water mixing station. It was a lot noisier than I expected it to be, but in the basement I can barely here it if I put my ear to the floor. It has no problem pumping the water up to my tank, and I actually think it runs better pushing the water up instead of down.

I just replaced my old sump with a Trigger Emerald 39 and redid most of my rock as well. I used Walt Smith 2.1 rock and it's gorgeous. The scape is so much better than just a bunch of piled rock. I am also switching out my hydras for a Giesemann Spectra.

I'll post some pics shortly and I will be hosting a meeting this spring if anyone wants to see it in person :)

It looks pretty good, lots of room for fish to cruise while still leaving room for alot of corals

It's amazing how summer takes over, and I get side tracked. I haven't posted in a while, but I have some updated photos of the tank.
