Sorry to hear !!
Varig made a good suggestion. Depending on path forward you might have to take the fish out and treat them in hospital tank

My understanding is the disease doesn’t materialize from thin air. It will definitely come from another fish or from a coral snail or anything wet that comes in the tank. It is definitely possible for disease to be in the tank without any fish showing signs though. There’s lots of evidence that the fish can be fighting off the disease with their immune system, but then if there’s a stressful event that weekends the fish slightly, the disease can break out. Stressors like a temp swing, tank change, extra aggression, etc.

My understanding is that unless you QT everything wet (literally everything), then it’s probably 95% likely you have ich in the tank at least. Which can be managed with UV and healthy fish (plenty of feeding etc).

Tanks don’t tend to have velvet and brook, as I understand it, because they’re deadly enough that if you have them, all your fish probably die. :/

That really sucks. Everyone's worst fear.

Most (if not all, honestly) fish diseases will not leave your system unless you have a fishless period of at least 8 weeks. Some like uronema can survive without a host too, so fallow doesn't work.

But for things like ich and velvet 8 weeks with no fish is typically safe. You would need to treat the remaining fish with something like copper or Chloroquine phosphate.

Quarantine is not easy! There are a lot of steps and preventing cross contamination is extremely important. One droplet of water from an infected tank can ruin a Qt. There's speculation that velvet can even be transmitted through the air. When it comes to the shop, I do qt requests at my house - I would not trust that there would be no cross contamination at the store.(Not trying to sell you on anything here, not taking requests at the moment 😅)

And yes, some diseases can come in on anything, corals snails etc. Ich is very likely to be in just about any tank but it isn't that bad if managed. Its the others that are the most dangerous ..

If you have any questions about qt or medicating I'm happy to help. I'm very obsessive about it with my personal tanks :)

Thanks! Yeah I am not convinced this was Velvet as the remaining five fish appear fine (aside from the FF that shows ick). I am no longer adding any medication at this point and UV is running 24/7. So now (assuming these fish make it), I have to decide if I manage the ick from here or move the fish to a QT with copper.

Most of my rock is glued to so I would need to break down the entire scape to catch them. Which I prefer not to do of course.

You can barrow my trap that works pretty well for catching fish if you need. I also have a small 5 gallon tank, copper, copper test kits etc that you are welcome to use for QT if you want or need. Tank is too small to take all the fish but maybe one or two at a time??

Ive only tried qt once and id did not go well. In the past ive just soaked mysis in selcon and feed heavy. And I keep cleaner shrimp. This seemed to take it down enough the the fish were able to fight it off on there own or appeared that way. But this was long time ago.

Good luck and hope for the best.

I was at @Livestuff place not too long ago. He had a fairly good size net he used to catch fish. The opening for the net was about 6x8 or something like that. Anyway, he cut the net off and used a clear ziplock style bag and fixed it to the net. He said he would just add food in the bag and position it to where the fish would swim into it to feed and pluck them right out. Since the bag is clear without holes it makes it near transparent in the water. It might be worth a short before ripping apart your rockwork. Maybe he can chime in and describe it better than me.

On a side note: I have always used "Microbe-Lift Herbtana Salt & Freshwater Fish Treatment". I just follow the directions on the bottle, and it has worked for me. Been a long time since I had an ick outbreak, but I have never lost anything while medicating my tank (fish or corals). Most things stay pretty closed up though. If you haven't already, you may want to consider dimming your lights back to help keep the fish a calmer. I doubt this helps but here is a link to a post I made April 2023. You can see how bad my tang looked. Not sure what it was but assuming ick at this point.

Black ich can be treated in the display with prazipro/praziquantel

I'm kind of busy right now so just want to add a quick note: Your tank is around 80 gallons, correct? If I were you and if I couldn't get the fish out of the tank any other ways, the last thing I would do is to pump all of the water out, net the fish out then pump the water back in. I actually did it a few times :D. Just have to make sure that when you get the end of the draining, you have all of the fish out in the open and not staying hidden inside some rock/cave that it gets stuck there and you couldn't get it out though. So, maybe do some feeding to get them out and not to spook them too much there, and remove any obstacles as much as possible prior to the draining. And of course, prepare all containers, and have all the hose and pumps and all that ready. You don't want to pump everything out then going 'Oops! Can't get the water back in!' :D ... And of course, make sure you are able to drain and pump the water back in QUICKLY (that would help).

20250221_071143.jpg Made this up with a clear bag that fish come in. I've had every fish in the tank while going for the one I wanted to catch.
not say it works great but doesn't hurt to try. I thinks nets are NOT the way to go.
I may have to use it soon as I now see a royal gramma with possible signs of an issue.

The Nyos works really well if you only feed multiple time a day into the trap only. With no flow in the tank. Took a few days but I was able to catch any fish I wanted, along with the clowns because they didn't care if they got caught over and over LOL.

I've had luck keeping different colors of nets (white, black , green, whatever you can find)
The fish seem to recognize the color, but if you switch it up on them they forget and dont immediately dart out of the way when you stick it in the tank.

Things are still humming along here.. no more losses and the remaining fish appear just fine. All parameters are good as well. So I am still trying to decide next steps here moving forward... Ick management or eradication. :) Regardless, I do plan to setup a hospital\QT tank so I am better prepared next time.

Things are still good over here.. I got some additional insight from Jeff at Fishotel which makes sense on the fish that seemed unaffected. I have since added a Orange Spotted Blenny from him. Blenny is doing great.

1 - One Spot Foxface (has some spots that look like ick) -- These guys are essentially bulletproof because of their slime coat. BUT unlike clownfish, these guys don't ever to really go down to Brooks. I assume its because they can shed their slimecoats.
1 - Ornate Leopard Wrasse (seems fine)
These guys are Bulletproof as well as their slime coats are also very thick (Hense they can sleep in the sand) and they too shed their slime coats every morning.
1 - Blue Spot Puffer (seems fine)
These guys don't have a slime coat pretty much and are also bulletproof outside ich
1 - Diamond Goby (seems fine)
These guys just don't care about fish disease for whatever reason. Never see these guys sick, just jump all the time
1 - Yellow Tang (seems fine)
These guys don't have much of slime coat but if I were to have picked the next victim it would be this fella.

Well things seem to have stabilized for the most part. I see no other signs of disease on the remaining fish. And I have since added a couple clowns and a young blue hippo. All appear fine. I feel the fishes natural immune system may have fought whatever this was off.. but who knows. I have been feeding with Selcon and Vita-Chem daily for weeks so I suspect that helps as well.

I may also do the eDNA water test to see what comes back. Has anyone else done that? I see there are two options..
