KJoFan's SCA 150g Build (1 Viewer)

You might have some options available to include mechanical filtration.
Are you able to install a free-standing rack that could implement filter socks? Or is there enough space to include a filter media tray? Is there the possibility of using AquaMesh?
If you want to post a photo of the sump layout for better reference, I might have some more options.

With my experience with leopard wrasses, once they start eating prepared foods, they won't have to depend on a pod population for nutrition. I have had great results with using the LRS Frenzy Blends. My Blue Star Leopard ate it with gusto; and even would eat nori. And the little Ornate Leopard Wrasse ate LRS Fish Frenzy the first day she came out. Sure, pods would be nice but I don't think they're vital to the diet of a wrasse that is eating prepared foods.
I wonder if it would be possible to implement one of those roller filters? Like the Clarisea? I'm unsure if it would hook over the side though since pre-fab acrylic sumps tend to have the lip on them. So, maybe it wouldn't work, as the water level would be too deep to just set it in the sump.

I had a long response typed up with some ideas, but I just googled the Triton V1 sump so I had a better understanding of the layout and I decided that my ideas were just bandaids for a poor design. It looks like the V2 sump is much better designed and fits what you're looking for in a sump.

I'm not too familiar with the roller mat filters, but any solution that you try with one of those still leaves you with the inaccessible drain chamber collecting detritus.

(I'm not trying to bring the mood down, but I'm trying to think of something that will work and I've not found it yet.)

I had this idea...
What if you moved two of the drain lines (full siphon and emergency) into the second chamber that would have a tray for filter socks? The tray could be removable or permanent. The open channel drain line would drain into the original drain chamber; just to add some "flow". If you were to make it so that you could place some of the Aquamesh mats into the drain chamber to create a habitat for pods, you could possibly benefit your wrasses in turn.

Or since obviously trigger knew v1 sucked so they made v2, contact them about it and see if they offer a discount to upgrade to the improved version of the sump

I’m not sure V1 sucked but it sure didn’t allow for mechanical filtration. And I didn’t think I’d need or want it originally.

I don’t much like filter socks, but maybe necessary at times.

So here’s some pics just now of the sump:

It’s a swamp.

I cringe to think of re-doing plumbing but it seems like a lot of other sumps, including the V2 are a bit better thought out variable. This is a bit of a one trick pony.

The silly thing is, V2 of the sump just removes that wall dividing off the drain section and opens it to the fuge area, and adds socks.

I gave up on red lighting in my sump. Have the Kessil 380 refugium grow light in my soon to be broke down old system and went ATS on the new. Even with filter socks I had algae and mulm build up in my sump, Chaeto, skimmer, etc. With the ATS on the new system I have virtually no light spill now. Sump looks great.

Could you do remote fuge or an ATS? I think even with the addition of socks you will have the same issues in your sump.

Part of it could be the huge UFO grow light I've got over the sump. It's a 300w light that lights up the entire thing. Probably just too much. The idea originally was large sump with room to grow lots of chaeto for nutrient control, which should be somewhat self limiting based on available nutrients and not strip the water as some methods can, and a lot of light was needed to max effect.

Well, I guess mission accomplished. I've got algae growth!

I realize this is not value added but I have been following all this and your statement made me lol
Haha! Really though, hair algae sucks up just as much in the way of nutrients, if not more I suppose but it also catches so. much. detritus. I might not even care about the HA, it's more about the amount of detritus.

I also think the HA came on like gangbusters when I trimmed my chaeto way back. I may have trimmed it back too far, and HA got the upper hand. It's one thing to have a bunch of chaeto you can remove and vacuum around, etc, but now it's become impossible to really clean the sump of all that crap.

Le sigh.

I've been using the ClariSea 5000 and in general I like it. I've only got it operating on one drain for a few justified reasons... one is pods or so I told myself. Two was longer roller life, and three was not over filtering. Four was that I wasn't buying 2 units (o:

Come check it out when in town. I'm currently testing the effectiveness of their branded roll vs a bubble magnus. Pretty sure you can plumb it if needed.

Maybe I need that Midwest Aquarium sump Dan is selling. It's 3" too wide for my display tank, but since I'm trying to plumb two tanks into my current sump, I could put this midway between the two tanks and plumb both to it. It's got..what, 4 drain and 3 return holes? I could utilize almost all of those with two tanks plumbed in.

But! I wouldn't want it just out in the open for noise purposes. Enclose it in a nice cabinet? @jlanger

A shot of how things sit, except at the far end is now a 4' tank intead of the one in the picture. The Ikea cabinet in the middle still fits in the middle. Replace that with the remote sump in a cabinet?

I think you've probably had it when I was there before but I didn't pay a ton of attention because it wasn't something I was considering. But, I think you wer sourcing other filter material at the time and had a few samples you were looking at. That's about all I remember on it.

It could be something that would work with the current setup. I'd probably only plumb my main siphon drain to it and disregard the drain from the other tank, as it would all really be the same system.

But, it would be nice to see one in action first.

Any thoughts on this idea from the pros? Good idea or pipe dream?

So here’s my 2 cents . Am not sure if detritus is really that bad . I have never ever cleaned my sump and detritus is like over 1.5 -2 inches think in some areas . I know Sanjay never cleans his sump and it’s probably 10-12 years of detritus .

I know it’s a general norm not to have detritus settle down but I doubt if it affects the tank .

Take My suggestion for what it’s worth but I would allow some detritus to settle at the botto and hardly worry about them .

I’ve decided to just move on with what I have. So we finished plumbing in the growout tank this weekend.

I cleaned as much GHA and detritus out of the sump as I could and will see how it goes. With the added tank flow through the sump has increased.

I also got my doser back in business. So I can start dosing again.

I want to hook up a reactor to run some carbon to try to clear up the water a bit. That will be for another day.

I’m also contemplating adding a reactor with CO2 absorbing media to help boost pH, but I’m not sure on that just yet. PH tends to hover around 7.8 give or take.
