If you're still having a problem with dry from blocking the vent holes and pushing the lid off, I hear that you can put silicone grease on the foam directing ring in the skimmer lid. That will cause the bubbles to burst upon contact so that all you get is liquid in the skimmer cup.

Pure gold here, many thanks for the idea. Works great, completely changes the dynamic of the skimmer. No more nasty foaming all over the place hole plugging can't see nothing collection cup anymore. Stuff comes up, stuff goes right down.

Was wondering about this - thanks for being the test baby

Glad to hear that worked well for you!

Today, Marty's stand just got a whole lot sexier!

Here's what it looked like this morning.
(Note that someone cleaned under the tank; the freezer and clutter was removed.)

And this is what it looks like tonight!

His wife even said, and I quote, that this was "the best Christmas present ever!"

After a few moments of looking at the new stand, we noted that our attention is more focused on the fish now; not the distractions contained below.
I think it turned out quite nice; if I say so myself.

Thanks Marty!

And "Thanks" for the great dinner also.
Damn fine steak! My family wondered why I didn't bring any home. "Too delicious", I said.

Many, many thanks Jason. Turned out better than I had hoped. Really 'finishes' things out way more than I would have ever expected.

Some pics to try and capture the stand w/o the lights blinding things out.

Much better pics.
I should've finished quicker when there was still daylight to get a good shot of my own.

Took ya long enough.

I hope that's not directed at me?

I think your couch is turned the wrong way though!

I agree.

Now just add your sand and it will look complete!

Here we go.... lol

What's working well:

Got the ozone reactor working great, spray nozzle was plugged up. I kinda figured it was just the way it's hooked up is a royal pain to work on. Use unions, repeat after me... use unions.

What's not so great:

Nitrate is higher then ever. Not sure how big of a mistake it was to stop vinegar dosing when switching to pellets. Needless to say, the pellets haven't kicked in (in my defense the vinegar never really kicked in either so...?)

Bio pellet reactor annoys me, the recirc intake keeps getting plugged with chaff.

The 'frag' tank is the largest algae scrubber in the state of Minnesota. Algae grows like mad in there, it's connected to the system with no tangs, crabs or snails. I need some active help in there.

Flooded the floor 3-4 times with the skimmer so far. That shut off deal might be a required element soon. I got a translucent bucket so at least I can see the level now. When I change socks the skimmer goes nuts, that can't be good.

Fish washing machine keeps plugging up. I'm going to buy a different one, I've convinced myself Samsung washers just can't handle sediment. LG, Whirlpoop (LOL on typo) and Elextrolux seem to be winners in this regards. I'd have already bought a new (used) one if things were nto so busy. Plus, I'd like to drive it around but driving on the yard right about now seems like a bad idea. If only I knew someone who lived in the Elko/New Market area to help me lug a washer down the stairs so I don't have to drive on the yard... :)

So the whole coral thing is tough with algae growing like gang busters.

PO4 control with lacl3 is stable and predictable. Don't think the pellets/baked in GFO is really helping that game much as I've needed to up the lacl3 dosing back to pre pellet levels.

Fish are all doing well. Little snippy past few days not sure whats up with that. Still very happy with the stand skinning.

Your dirty socks are not getting cleaned enough. If my sock stays moist (even after cleaning) it develops organic bi-products that mess with my skimmer. I scrub them well before I soak in H2O2 for 2 days then wash them again and was able to address this issue.

Marty, your skinned stand looks really good. I really like the full tank shot looking straight on at it.

Is the chaf clogging your recirculating biopellet reactor from the type of pellet you are running, or just a characteristic of biopellets in general? I haven't messed with them enough to know. Doesn't seem like the intake would clog if the recirculating flow was enough because I would think the flac would come off in smaller chunks then.

Its the nature of the pellet once the bio pellets kick of it reduces drastically, Marty's #'s are so high he needs to dose vinegar and LaCl until PO4 and Ntrates are reduced and biopellets are fully cycled IMHO
