Neptune Systems Trident (1 Viewer)

Not good news over at New Wave, number 1 reseller of Neptune in the US and they got 2. BRS got 70 and sold them 30 mins early..

Agreed. I was driving by New Wave at about 11:30 so I stopped in the parking lot and gave them a call. Was hoping I could get in line to pick one up at noon when they opened but I got the same story.

Does sound like there will be a decent flow of units coming in. May not be a huge flood of them but hopefully they continue to roll in.

Crazy to see some of the prices on Ebay. I can see how people get tempted to sell them but who can't wait a few weeks to get one?

Also - do you know if the intake line is purged between tests? Or is there tank water in the line until the next test? Is this part of the reason they make you test alkalinity 4 times a day?

Water is left in the line after the test. Next test it does purge the water so it is testing fresh tank water. Part of the reason you cannot change the tube length. It needs to know how much water is in it.

Well, now that the NDA is lifted, can one of you take some pictures of the inside of the unit? :)

Ours may look slightly different than the release version as Erik and I were first round. Other than the drawer with the bottles there is not too much you can see inside without taking the cover apart (have not done that yet).

It’s as if Trident is the solution to everything wrong going on in your tank :D or like often - get the equipment first even before we have a problem .

Sometimes I wonder about people in this hobby !!!!

Currently on BRS (About 10 minutes early)

Saw it drop from 50 to 32 in a few minutes. Hurry if you are still awake.

Haha oh man! I was passssed out. Did not make it.

The girlfriend called new wave and they said 7-10 days for a preorder! We're on a list. Fingers crossed the supply chain isn't held up!

I wouldn’t mind automating the testing and getting more readings but since I’m not a 2-part guy I can’t justify the Trident. Maybe the price will drop to $299 in a few years and then I’ll pull the trigger. Looks like a lot of plastic to me.

The fact that the trident needs to be re calibrated at the factory is a concern. Not sure if that is true or not

Not true. It can be calibrated in place. In fact you get a bottle of calibration fluid with every reagent refill and you are supposed to calibrated each time.

What you need to send it in for is maintenance. They replace the parts that wear out. Recommended is every 18-24 months, but it is not required. Cost is not set but you can either send it in for $150 - $200, or DYI for under $100. DYI is not recommended due to the ease of messing it up, but are offering it for people who prefer.

Lots of good info in the following links. It does NOT need to be sent in for recalibration. It is an item that will need servicing but there will be an option to send it in, do it yourself, or have a unit cross-shipped so you are not without it for very long. It has a peristalic pump and other items that will require maintenance, could be every 18 months, could be longer.

When I picked mine up at BRS. Chad said he thought I was the only one in MN who grabbed one of the initial units. I'll admit, I tossed mine on ebay after seeing one had been bid up fairly high. If someone with deep pockets wanted it bad enough to pay double and I wouldn't have to pay for mine. I could live with waiting a few weeks to find another unit if it wasn't going to cost me anything out of pocket. But after a couple of days and no bids. I said screw it and took down the listing. I wanted to keep it anyway, but had to roll the dice on listing it.

Now I need to actually get my 2016 apex running. Although I suppose I could just have a head unit with just an EB832 to 1-link the trident to get it up and running while I move over programming from the classic for everything else.

I understand the frustration that BRS and likely other online retailers received far more product than LFS like New Wave. But if you do the math, they were still only able to sell 1.4 units per state with the 70 BRS had available.

I would think the high scalper market on eBay would not include too many. Most people can wait a couple weeks to pay normal retail. Of course there will always be someone with more money than sense or patience.

Hello All, new to TCMAS, but not the hobby. I will be curious to see everyone's experience over time. Who would test their water 4 times a day? Neptune's response was trust us it needs to be done. My guess is that their titration system needs to be flushed that often or you'll get false readings. Just like keeping Hanna vials clean to maintain performance. The concept is great, but I believe there were design hurdles they could no overcome.so this was their solution. Like everyone else I like cool stuff, but I'll definitely take a wait and see on this one, the hobby is expensive enough as it is. But, good there are some early adopters out there to give the rest of us feedback.

Even if it was not a requirement I would run that many tests a day. You need those to be able to see day night swings, and you are able to react faster to unexpected changes. I went into the trial thinking why would I ever need to test more than once a day, now sometimes I'm testing more than the minimum when I am trying to adjust dosing.

You also need the 4/2 testing to be able to accurately control the DOS if you are using that too.
