QT Procedure and You: A Guide to Not Catching TDs and Beating the Axis (1 Viewer)

Great to see QT topic alive and being practiced.

My process was based on two concepts - a QT tank and a hostiptal tank. QT was a stress free place to get eating, spend 7 (I forget) days in Chloroquine Phosphate, then a prazi pro treatment.

Should something do wrong, into a hostiptal tank with what ever meds were needed- Kanaplex etc.

Cooper or chloroquine won’t blow out the biological filter at normal doses so makes that easier. I never like going crazy with drugs on the fish (drugs are for people!) and it can get expensive. I was QT larger fish/in a 75g and that was a lot to run antibiotics against.

Note: chloroquine kills anthsis

Chloroquine Phosphate is the wonder drug which I'd love to use in place of copper, but it's hard to get and impossible to test for in your water. It works really damn well though, and doesn't affect a fish's immune system. I don't think I'll try it on my current build, but if I ever restart I'll give it a look.

This is a great write up. I have never really done QT as I really do not keep more than 2-3 fish and they are all about 10-15 bucks each. Once my 90 is going strong I plan to get more exotic fish so I will probably want to get into this.

That's the reason I got serious about QT myself. Went from a 45g to my 220g and got the fish that got me into the hobby - my emperor angel. I want them to be fat and healthy, and I plan to get a few more expensive wrasses in the future.

Between QT batches I'll clean and let my QT dry too - I use RO water, vinegar and karkov vodka to clean my QT.

Does drying substantially kill any remaining bacteria? Our QT is up and running for the first time. Definitely wasn't thinking and used the veggie clip in QT. D
Will drying it and quick wash before back to DT do the trick?

Awesome info. Thanks for taking the time to put it on paper. We've got two angels in day 3 - so perfect timing! Hypo at first - not sure if we'll go the full bulletproof cocktail of meds yet. But definitely something to consider.

Bacteria I'm not sure of, but it'll take care of protozoan parasites like ich and velvet.

I hadn't realized you had an emperor angel. How does he do with your corals?
I don't have anything he would definitely eat, but he does peck at my millies on occasion. They still have PE, so he must not be doing too much harm.

I haven't added any fish yet, but this is going to be my QT method...CP to prazi to observation to DT
I got my CP from Ebay.

Looks good. I would maybe consider getting API General Cure and Seachem Focus to make medicated food so you can treat for internal parasites too, but you might be fine just watching for stringy poop.

Agreed, it's good to have those on hand. I have a BRS/Amazon list of meds to buy for hospital/QT. I don't want to have to order them after I see an issue.
I lost 2 acros from the swap already, from my heater controller readout being wildly off, I wouldn't recommend the finnex digital heaters even on a small 20 gallon it's set at 83 to get a stable tank temp of 77.5 - 78.2
My apex is hooked to my brute can cycling rocks for my 50 gallon tank. I didn't even think to check the finnex heater since it has the digital readout. My mistake. Lessons learned.
I'd rather be proactive than reactive in these situations going forward.

I didn't even think to check the finnex heater since it has the digital readout.

unfortunately, temp probes, like any probe, also need to be calibrated. the finnex controller's probe can't be calibrated per-say, but compare it to a known temperature and do a mental adjustment every time you look at the finnex readout. it's hard to not confuse a digital readout with accuracy, but just electronics being involved does not rule out the probe being out of calibration.

I am going through a calibration process for a couple of temp probes myself and am taking readings from multiple different technologies (glass thermometer, digital probe, and an infrared gun) and do some sort of average on the values.

You're right the readout doesn't mean that's accurate. I found out the hard way. My tank was 72-73 degrees. Lucky everything else is still alive.
I'm now using infrared gun to double check temp. It's within .2 of the apex probe setup on my brute can.

Neat part of CP is it even kills algae, keep the QT tank squeaky clean! :)
Temporarily....chloroquine diphosphate is loaded with phosphates. You'll end up with a ton of algae. I made the mistake in my 300 gallon. Ended up with LITERAL ROPES of hair algae. 1" around and 4ft long. Only time a Sea hare was justifiable.
