Raccoon Butterfly in sps tank for mejano control (1 Viewer)

We ordered a Farcula Butterfly (not sure if I spelled that right) read about a guy who does Hawaii aquarium and he swears they eat them ****s....we special ordered one from EWOF-----I have seen no aptasia since!!! And he hasn't bugged any of our clams or corals...we have had him for a few months now I think

I picked up a Racoon Butterfly on Friday. It is now in my 120 display SPS dominated mixed reef to include 2 clams. After 1 night and half a day in a acclimation box I let it loose and it immediately went after the aptasia in my tank, even with my PBT harrasing him while he was hunting for aptasia. I Have seen it nip at various coral but only once or twice. It almost seems likeit was tasting various things and didnt like any of them more then the aptasia. now I cant say if it eats mejanos or not. It hasnt bothered my clams even once yet that I have seen. If some one has a small rock with some Mejanos on it I would be willing to conduct a test on the one I have.
 
Racoons will eat majanos and I have had success with them eating every bit of them to the point where they do not grow back after removing the rock or the Racoon Butterfly. I would be concerned about them eating mushrooms, some softies, or clams after the other food sources are gone.
 
Has not toucjed them even once that I have seen and I watched him for a good 2 hours right after I released it in my display. My clams also dont have any bite marks out of the mantels and have full mantle extension.
 
The LFS by me ordered Copperbands and Racoons in for this week. I am going to go up in a little bit and see if they got them in. They are supposed to be in either today or tomorrow depending on how long it took the wholesaler to fill the order. they will be holding a copperband for me for a couple weeks to make sure its going to live. you can have dibs on my racoon for what I paid for it at OD on friday.
 
I potentially have a Red Sea Regal Angel coming in the next couple of weeks... I don't want to add anything more right now...
 
I got one at my LFS EWOF....It took a liking to my open brain and zoas.
It is yet to eat any food I put into the tank, but it POOPS like a machine.
Pick-Pick-Pick all day long. It has not picked at any of my 4 BTA's but the 5" maroon is keeping a close guard on them. Its not interested in the few aptasia I have either. Its a good looking little fish, but like damsels you may regret putting a Coon into a reef.
ow much was the OD coon? Size?
 
What is the LFS price on Racoons? I saw OD had them a few weeks back, but I forgot to look. I am thinking of getting a small one for my tank. How are they on the aggression scale?

I have a SOB yellow tang, a good size powder brown, and a mellow maroon clown.
 
I got the Racoon for OD for $52.00 Healthy, eating frozen mysis, and about 3" he is actually very easy to catch with a soft net I have. He is usually out in the open at night and even when I reach in the tank it doesnt hide. He is not very agressive at all but was able to hold his own against my PBT and Purple tang with his dorsal spikes.
 
Pm sent on the racoon. I'd like to try it out for Majano control
 
Has the Raccoon taken any interest in the majano? I tried pulling the main culprit pieces out and not feeding them, hoping the darn things would just die. No luck.
 
Funny, I dont see any aptasia in my tank now, and the Coon is finally taking mysis. Guess the live stuff in the tank is running low.
Not messing with the BTA's, and picking less at Zoas.

Cool! I'm picking up a Red Sea Regal Angel tonight, I hope he'll munch on some of those mejanos... while I haven't had a Raccoon before, the CBB seemed like they were too shy during feeding and were bullied by my anthias during feeding.... Do you have clams?
 
May need to pick up a Coon, the peppermints in our tank just aren't doing anything with the aptasia and it's starting to spread to other rocks.

No clams
 
Peppermints seem to only like the little aptasia, not the huge dudes.... for that purpose a CBB or as it looks, a Raccoon will work much much better.
 
I've heard so much about CBB not eating well. Raccoons sound like they will be a bit easier to get to eat.
