Tap water vs ro water!! (1 Viewer)

well i already have the octopus 200 i just got it on friday. so now my next thing will be ro di unit. I'm not going down that road on asking stuff for free thats y i asked if i could pay 3$ for 20-25gallons of water! LOL

If you think it will take you longer than 1 month to get enough money for an RO/DI, then sell the skimmer and try to get what you paid. There will always be another skimmer come up down the road.

Like myself and others have said, RO/DI is more important that your skimmer.

Carrying the water to and from for a nano is bad enough. But for a 125g, it will get old real quick.

Another suggestion - I have this one from Air Water Ice. It's the "budget" model.

It's $109, good for apartments because it comes with a faucet adapter (no plumbing changes necessary). I started out with a 29 gallon nano and now have 265 gallons going and it still does just fine for me. Later on I purchased a float valve, 40 gallon food grade drum, and the Auto Shut Off Valve and I always have plenty of RODI water ready.

The original filters will likely last you over a year and replacement filters are only $28.

You can get by with one of the less expensive units like kbb's link. I used a 2 stage with no DI for years and even though it wasn't the best, it was better then tap water or having to buy water. I also always have at least 30 gals of ro/di ready to go so I could help you out while you are working on getting a unit.

I say you should keep using tap water for now and save the money you would normally spend on ro and buy one in a couple months. You can get a brand new unit for $100. When you do get a unit put all your livestock in a tub or something and restart your tank with all new water and let it cycle before transferring the livestock over

Guess it would help to read the whole thing...oops

But for about $20 more you could get a brand new 75 gpd RODI from BRS

Not to rag, but if you can't afford an R/O unit, how will you feed your fish, buy salt, replace bulbs, fix something that breaks on your car, etc?

Seems like a bad road to go down that will prevent you from saving money. Not that I am a life coach or it's any of my business, just lookin at the big picture....

I know it's a long way for you but if anybody else is interested PetExpo in Mankato has RO water for 39 cents a gallon. Also I don't know if this makes a difference but when I started my small tank I filled it with tap water and haven't had any problems but I have a well so I don't have all the crap they put in city water. Keep an eye on CL I just picked up a brand new 75g per day RO set-up still in the packaging for 50.00.

Not that I can speak for him or anything, but I know how it is. My situation is similar. I recently graduated and have 4 years worth of debt in the form of loans which I'll have to start paying back in a couple months. I have some money saved up right now, but don't really want to spend it on things that i can get away with not doing (like buying a GOOD skimmer or a refractometer) . I SHOULD probably buy a RO/DI system, but it's kind of one of those expenses that seems like a lot at once, even though it'll eventually end up paying for itself. Kind of like buying a tv, and then finding out you gotta buy a blu ray player to take advantage of HD..... if that makes any sense...

Yes but if you research first, then you would know all the expenses before getting the tank. I get my RO/DI for free and its the cleanest possible.
