Hi everyone! I have a 72 bow front with 11 fish. My largest fish are a 3'' Tomini tang and a 4'' mandarin. I found a great deal on a Purple Tang that I just don't think I can pass up. I am getting a 125 soon (already paid for so I am for sure getting it), and would like to know if I could buy this Purple tang (looked about 4'') and hold it in the 72 without much agression? I do 10 gallon water changes weekly and have a skimmer rated for a 120 gallon tank, so I am not too worried about increased bio-load. If there may be agression, which tang would show it? The place selling the tang had it established for 2 weeks, and then added a Tenetti and Convict tang to the same tank. they said the Purple showed no agression. Thanks!

I have a 120 with a tomini and a purple. They are best of buds and are always next to each other. The purple tang was introduced first at about 3 inches. He is now about 4.5. The tomini was introduced months after the purple tang at about 1". He is now 3". I used an acclimation box to introduce him. I recommend you do the same.

Thanks for the input! Could you describe an acclimation box? I think I have seen them, but am not sure.

Thanks, are these for sale in most LFS? Do you just keep them in there for a day or so? Less?

The one I use is sold at Saltwater Empire in various sizes. I kept the tomini in there for a week. I also do that with all newly introduced wrasses.

Would it be possible without it since the Tomini is in there first? SWE is pretty far for me.

Problem is I would buy it today, as I am worried about it being sold to someone else! Otherwise I would go to SWE. I will buy an acclimation box before the next time I think about adding another tang, but for now do you think there would be much agression?

But which tang do you think would show more agression? since the PT would be added long after the Tomini has been established? Also consider the fact that they added a Tenetti and Convict 2 weeks after adding the PT. Does that necessarily mean the PT is passive? I just don't want the PT attacking the other fish in the tank. I am not as worried about the Tomini attacking it, since the PT is much bigger.

Also the Mandarin is slow, so it would have trouble dodging the attacks of a tang.

Purple tangs are one of the more aggressive tangs. That being said however, the purple tang has no territory to defend, the tomini does. Expect to see some fighting for a day or so.

Also forgot to mention: I once added a YT with the Tomini and after a day of some dispute they swam together and ate from the same rock and pieces of Nori. about 2 weeks after I added the YT I found it being eaten alive by the CUC. It obviously was already sick or something. It couldn't have been the Tomini right? It was bigger than the Tomini also.

Sounds like the yellow tang was cyanide collected, but I'm pretty sure they don't collect like that in Hawaii. And yes, they will try to spear each other. I've never had a problem with it, other than a sliced fin or two that heals within a week.

Thanks. Is that what happens with Cyanided fish generally? also, is it common to have more than sliced fins? like gashes in their bodies? if so, can that be fatal? And also if the YT wasn't cyanide collected, since it was probably from Hawaii, what could it have been? Just would like to make sure it probably wasn't the Tomini.

Good God, man. Nobody wants to help because you aren't listening, anyway. We're all saying WE DON'T KNOW. WE CAN'T KNOW! Nobody can POSSIBLY know if one fish will get along with another fish.

:micro:

Sorry, I was asking more for experience or opinions, but I guess I didn't make that clear. I realize it is always a gamble, but I wanted to go in somewhat knowing my chances based on how many had good experiences somewhat like mine and how many had bad. I know in the end the decision would be up to me.
