Yet another DIY LED setup bulid questions. (1 Viewer)

So what was your final color mix?
CREE XP-E Blue 3W LED QTY: 6
CREE XP-G Neutral White 3W LED QTY: 3
CREE XP-G R5 Cool White 3W LED QTY: 8
CREE XR-E Warm White 3W LED QTY: 3
CREE XT-E Royal Blue 3W LED QTY: 22
Violet UV 3W LED QTY: 6

All the different colors will be driven by there own driver. Color combo may change later depending on look. I also may add green and red leds

:bawling:I have order everything that I need for the build. Hopefully should be building the setup next week.

Now that I think about it there's the frag show coming up next month too. My wallets going to be hurting for quite a while longer.

For the drivers I went with Steve's hopefully I have better luck them you did. Try to get all the part for a DIY one was too much of a hassle. As to heat sinks I went with scrap 1 1/2 inch aluminum C channel that we had laying around at work. I might upgrade later to the sleek black heat sinks at Rapidled in the future.lol

If you do have issues with the drivers I can most likely help you with them, this includes repairing them. I found a good source for the driver chips at $2.00 per chip.

ugh...This is ironman FIY. The wife forgot to log out of her account...

Now time to start building the setup and hope I don't have issue with the driver like ironman been having. Though my drivers did come in a ESD bag so that might help a lot.

Huh, I hope that is ESD foam they were packed in. All my drivers were sent in the ziplock bags with the ESD warning sticker on them (what a joke).

Hopefully it is, the sticker I got just have is just a ESD warning label. I have ESD bags at work so I just stuck it in them. Also the back of the driver were mark with what the MA were in permanent marker.

Little update. Done tinning all the leds. Didn't fry out any.

Now got to mount them to the aluminum railing. Anyone know where I can get some thermal paste locally. So I don't have to drill holes.

You mean thermal epoxy? Trust me, drilling the holes isn't that bad, and is well worth the extra effort.

They make different kinds of thermal paste. Some are aluminum based and some are silver based. The silver based paste is a lot more expensive but has way better heat transfer properties. Since it is critical to keep these LEDs cool I would recommend the silver paste.

Some more updates. was hoping to tap everything out and have led placement set up, but the tap broke. :brick1:

And the place where the tap broke. Got a new one so hopefully I'll have them all tap out today

Get self tapping screws and just drill them directly.. no more broken taps; I think I'm smarter after two broken tips lol

I used something like this from homedepot... size 8 and with a philips srcew driver head. make sure to get some nylon washers to use between the screw and the LED star

http://www.homedepot.com/Crown-Bolt...yword=self+tapping+metal+screws&storeId=10051

Might have to try that if this one goes too. I do have some nylon washer, but I may not have enough. Where did you get yours at? Couldn't find any at menards or home depot.

I got mine from Fastenal; they did not carry the ones I wanted but they got it shipped to store and arrived the next day... they do charge shipping but it wasnt much plus it was a tad cheaper than getting it from Mcmaster or other sites...

Go to my build thread, I layed out how to tap without breaking the tap. FYI, I do this sort of thing for a living. I also went over applying thermal compound, and soldering.

ARRRRRGGHHH broke another one.:swear: It snap when the aluminum bar fell. Anyone know a place where I can just grab the 4-40 tap. Menards and Home depot have none or just the whole set, which I don't need.
