Had I known a mere 180mile round trip would have had gotten me the pleasure of visiting one of the best tanks ever seen, I would have made the trip... even with my van, much earlier.
It's not the plate sized named zoanthids, its not all the fancy equipment, nor the list of things that came from SWE (OK that helps :) ). Its not the starphire tank or the ATI lights or Deltec skimmer. What it was.... is... I just don't know how to put it in words.

You probably guessed it. I finally got the moto trips started with Jim ... and from what it sounds like we might as well call it Jim and Quinton's tank.

The whole presentation of the 120 is amazing. All the equipment is hidden in a closet or under the tank. Its a look I think is important. There is just the right amount of corals and enough room around them to fill out. The tank is in what I would call the beginning phases of being mature. There are two medium sized tangs, fat and healthy. Lots of LPS. Duncans, Acans, Frogspawn and Octo, candy cane... polyp heaven. Some frags, but many colonies. It doesn't look like a chop shop at all. Really the large toadstool from Peggy crowns the tank though. Ya, its not Tyree; no it doesn't look like a rainbow of fruit flavor.. It does have a little movement in its corner... but most of all it looks old and screams of healthy life. Most of us have seen this specimen before. it makes the 120 look like a 75. If I thought I could guilt Jim into a 300 for it I would... I can't, can I?

Jim's attention to detail and humble crediting of his sources are more apparent in his aquarium then he things (its obvious because he will tell you over and over when you visit, as if these things were lost on you the first time over). The rock work is minimal and amazing.

I have seen lots of SPS BB tanks with properly organized corals. I have seen plenty of DSBs filled to the brim with a million interesting hitchikers. Jim's tank is impossibly some where in between. There are none of the tell tale unsightly sand trapped gunk pockets, yet the tank is far from sterile. The aquarium is full of showpieces yet somehow doesn't feel packed or colectorish (know what I mean?). Most mature tanks look natural to the point of being uninteresting, or unnatural to the point of gaudy and contrived. The New Ulm 120 takes you in and you never question the placement of anything, as if everything fits as if the whole thing were sliced out of the reef and buggied in by Amish with hemp underwear (just to attest how natural they are).

I think a huge part of Jim's success is hand feeding (tweezers feeding rather). I'm a broadcast feeder in my LPS tanks. I'm a starver in my SPS tanks (thats why my sps are pastel compaired to Li's). Jim feeds each polyp directly. How much time does that take, Jim?

I hope I get free enough to dedicate myself to a single tank as much as Jim has on his. I take off my hat (helmet) to the wonder in new Ulm. It is well worth your time to make a trip to see this inspirational reef-aquarium!

Thank you so much for having us over!

My Suggestions:

one: Pull the xenia. In a tank like the 180 at work it could be trimmed, but with all the overhangs and tight structures the xenia could get out of hand and become a nightmare.

Two: The LEDs are cute, but the velcro looks goofie, perhaps some black acrylic taped to the eurobracing or screens once you get them? (minor detail).

Three: Get a movement fish... Sunset fairy wrasse perhaps? Didn't you get some sharknose gobies? I didn't notice them.

na, Spring brought a 10 pound watermelon as a house warming gift... which I bet will show up at the party tomorrow, lol

In any case, no room for cameras.

i for one may need pictures to verify your story.

sounds like a winner though!

I only consult and occasionally tweak a few things with my DIY skills. That tank is a testament to Jim's level of detail to the particulars.

no pics...
We keep meaning to do so but never get it done. By the time I went home to eat and then gather my camera and tripod, Jim called and said the Duncans were closing up so he wanted to wait.

All in good time, though.

Fritz ... you were dead on about my skimmer not performing due to excessive turnover from that Mag 9.5. I put the OR back in and withing 20 minutes was starting to get that thick head of foam I was accostomed to from the Extreme 160. Thank you.

(blushes) thanks!

Gosh, what a write-up! As you were drafting your epistle, I was all the way over in Oyam's thread considering lunch tomorrow ... and you are right... that melon's carbon footprint is about to get 90 miles longer :)

Fritz, Chad, Spring & Rain moto'd all the way to New Ulm! What a delight! Then Q came over & the party started. Fritz even brought a ginormous watermelon as a "hostess gift." (Pretty amazing what fits on that cute little scooter ;)) What a magical afternoon. Highlight of my summer.

Anyone is welcome at any time. WKJames even suggested I consider taking the first meeting in September? I'm thinking a Saturday mid-afternoon-til-whenever time frame might be appropriate given the distance involved. Driving here is a real sacrifice I know, so nobody will go away hungry if I can help it. The pictures Q takes will be forwarded to Kelly, so he can attach them to the "official" meeting invite.

My nuisance Xenia came in as a hitch hiker on Peggy's Queen Sarc (she did apologize!), and you are right -- I think pruning is definitely in order. When I "adopted" the Sarc, my 120 was just right. But given its growth, I may have no choice but to eventually find a Starphire 300 (OMG how much will THAT be?!)

Great suggestions re black acrylic for my 4 blue moonlight LEDs... I've always hated Velcro on the ATI Powermodule. Q points at it & makes fun of it at least once a month. It will be better in September :)

Your shark-nose goby is in there somewhere, he just comes & goes ... I really liked your idea re netting: just overhang the Tech's Eurobrace so I can keep wrasses where they belong. Then SWE may "donate" a wrasse to the New Ulm 120 (haha, I can just see Li cringe at the thought)!

Re target feeding, I become impatient after about an hour, so then I take a night or two off & later move on to the next group of corals. Each mouth gets fed an average of once/week, more or less. I tried broadcast feeding a couple times, but I always felt guilty as I watched mysis slip past the intended target. Then later, I would get algae blooms when my phosphates went through the roof. As it is, I feed so heavily that I am already tethered to carbon & GFO.

Next step will be an actual O3 reactor, hopefully from BRS in a couple of months. I've been running a jury-rigged O3 setup for over a year (it is safe & effective -- no smell of ozone, and the cat isn't dead), so it will be nice to run O3 in a pressurized reactor so I can control O3 to ORP set-points instead of just using safety values programmed into the AC3.

Your visit today really was the highlight of my summer. All 4 of you brought sunshine to New Ulm. Thank you for coming.

x2.. Jim's tank is absolutely amazing. He really turned me on to LPS corals. So much color, and his huge centerpiece is really cool.. never have thought i'd seen that from a softie. Q came over while I was visiting, great company with both. I'll have to get over there again soon and see Q's tank also. Yes, worth the trip.. a couple of great guys.

Thanks Andrew :) Your visit was a lot of fun! And so was your mom & dad's a few weeks later! Which reminds me, I finally have some of those "AOG morphs" if you are still interested. Same deal as last time, just frag 'em forward. I can't remember how many polyps, but I think there are enough to split w/your dad. I'm off Monday if you want to drive over, otherwise any day next week.

X3 Jims Tank is awesome......and Jim and Q are both great guys to shoot the crap about reef tanks with. Yay to good southern members!

I am slobbering just over the reviews and if you do host a meet - look out, after the reviews you will be inundated!!!

Need to see ......................................puleeeaaasseee...

I would also like to see Southern members have an active voice on the BOD, so I am especially pleased you decided to run this year. Wanna carpool on the 14th, maybe meet in St. Peter or LeSueur? Maybe Alan (daililammy) will come with! Q and I are leaving work about 3:30 that day.

Haha! Yeah, I know Angie ... I'm just a tease :)

All my $ gets drowned in my reef, so I have never managed to save up enough for a truly good camera. As such I rely on the talent & charity of others in that regard. I did once manage to take exactly 3 pics of my old 65 (sorry, you'd probably have to search my threads to find 'em -- or maybe Peggy still has 'em on her website? I haven't looked lately), but even then my friend Eric (Zibba) had to correct white balance. Those 3 pics may provide a taste of my fetish for softies & LPS, but in all modesty I think they have since been eclipsed since the 120 began her bloom. I promise though. Q and I will make updates a real priority.

Your enthusiasm is a breath of fresh air. I've also enjoyed following your thread. One day I hope we might gain the other's perspectives by meeting in person as opposed to our keyboards. So the forums do serve their purpose for those of us who live far away. Best of luck in the upcoming election!

Thanks,

~Jim

I went also. Absolutely breath taking beautiful. Thank you Jim for your hospitality:beerchug:

I am not sure on that yet but will get back to you. I will be there for sure but may be in the cities already. There is some tough competition in my category but I agree we need some souther voice on the BOD. Time will tell. ANyway back to your beautiful tank. If I make it down I can bring the camera.

No, it wasn't filmed here. It was based in New Ulm but, for some reason, it was filmed in Canada. Nobody around here had even heard of it until release.
