I most of the time would never post in something like this as it's just too much drama but this time I'm going to.

I want to start by saying I am glad I was able to be introduced to this club/forum by another member on here when I responded to a Craigslist add for a tank a couple of years ago. It has been the one of the main factors in why I have been able to successfully keep my reef tanks.

I was also looking to see when was the last time I was able to actually make it to a meeting and it's been a very long time. Even though I don't agree with some of the changes, I did not attend the business meeting so I will have to just live with them if I want to continue to participate. I am glad though I will now have an option to either pay to play or go to a meeting.

I just came home from the hospital where my wife has just had our new baby and my time will be even shorter than ever when it comes to being able to make it to meetings SO I will gladly give my money to continue to enjoy some form of membership in this club and if I can make it to a meeting in the future then even better and I will... It's as simple as that. I would have loved to be able to make every meeting possible but with a career and family that is just not possible.

As for the issue of the classifieds...I have gathered a TON of stuff and also sold and FIF few things along the way and because of this I love being able to help others out because others have done the exact same thing for me! The few people I have met out here in the Apple Valley, Lakeville, Farmington, and Rosemount area through the forum I try to stay in touch with and we help each other out or visit outside of the forum to see each others tanks and what not. The classifieds was one of the methods outside of going to the meetings to meet people here and obtain help when it was needed. I would hope that continues with the new standards that will be put in place but we have to give it a chance to work or fail before complaining about it.

What the BOD's have given us is an option where there was none before. There are 480 or so members in the club and there were only 40 or so who attended the business meeting (I was not one of them by the way). Maybe the next meeting those who have issues with the way things were voted in will make a concerted effort to attend this meeting to have their voices heard. I for one will try to make the next one so that I can educate myself in how it works and hopefully be able to participate in some of the decisions made.

This nonsense of after the fact complaining about things is not going to change it. When you don't like how elected officials of the government do things you have a set date and time to vote on it. If you don't vote you don't get to have your voice heard. You have to wait till the next voting opportunity to vote and if there are enough people with your same opinions on the matter then it can make a difference HOPEFULLY.

Lets get back to the business of talking about our reef tanks please because I need David Grigor's and others with LED experience help ASAP and I feel they are being distracted by this thread right now!! LOL

There was no real explanation to my questions until a couple post ago which the answer was "NOTHING" which is the only good answer to my question. And if you think there are benefits to the members by shutting the classifieds down, can you please list one or two? Don't say involvement since I'm paying $30 already.

There have been answers in posts 47, 58, 62, 74, 78, 104, 105, and 154. I'm not going to waste time repeating their answers. Again, the mere fact that you don't like the answers and think they are "nothing" does not change the fact that your question has been answered.

benefits to the club:
- Increases value of the sponsorship, possibly bringing in more sponsors. Sales by sponsors are more visible to nonmembers.

- small fee 30$/year can add up quickly when you have 10 or 100 people opting for this method of membership. Every little bit helps.

Member benifits:
- Members are better protected from scams and other problems. I would feel more comfortable buying equipment from someone who is a TCMAS member, than from someone on Craigslist.

yes, these changes do reduce the number of buyers and sellers. It may encourage meeting attendance. If you care enough to get to a business meeting to vote, you should be active enough to make a meeting, join the BOD, or host a meeting.

If you don't like it, wait till the next business meeting. You might change your mind by then, otherwise you can vote to have it changed back. If you were at the meeting, voted against it and it still passed, you have the right to complain I guess.

This is looking like the biggest thread of 2013, and i just wanted to be a part of it too. :biglaugh2:

Good answer on the club benefits, those were my exact thoughts And my only thoughts.

I think the changes are great for the club. Stop complaining, weigh your options and decide if this club is for you or not.

I really do not understand your point. These "$10.00 frags" will still require you to travel somewhere to pick them up. So you're going to need some mode of transportation regardless. Now if you do buy a frag from someone here chances are you will need to travel to

Let me give an example with a conversation:
1st scenario:
Son: hey dad, there's a guy selling a rbta for $5, he lives in Blaine. Can you drive me fifteen minutes to pick it up?

Dad: sure no problem!
----------
2nd scenario:

Son: hey dad can u drive me to a meeting 15 mins away and hang out with a bunch of strangers for a few hours, then wait for my membership, then I can check out some deals on the classifieds?

Dad: son are you smoking dope? lol

Sorry for stirring this up again but I can tell you that the first meeting I went to was the amazing and when my parents came to pick me up from the meeting they were impressed with the tank and the people. This goes the same with the frag swap. Not a single experience has set my parents on guard aside from the usual "Parent Paranoia".

If anything my parents response is more realistically (aka. Not made up)

Me: Hey dad can we go drive 15min to pick up a $10 frag?

Dad: Ugh, you have enough corals.

-------------------------

Me: Dad can you bring me to a TCMAS meeting?

Dad: A what?

Me: It is a meeting at a TCMAS member's house where we meet other people.

Dad: No Problem, when is it?

Me: . . .tomorrow

Dad: Ugh -.-*

------------------------------------------------

"There are no strangers, just friends we haven't met yet."

Hence the word "SCENARIO". Not all experiences will be the same.

The people that are paying just to get full access online would not benefit because they aren't attending the meetings to recieve the benefit. If they were they would not have to pay. Don't get me wrong, I support the club and when I go to the frag swaps I participate in the raffle even though I know I won't win because I know the money is going to the club.

Angie, I know that this will not change anything now but the subject needs to be discussed with more than just the few people that could show up. I believe that if the topics that were going to be voted on were more well known ahead of time, then you would have had a different turn out. My intent is to voice my opinion and see who else agrees so that come next vote, you know what to vote for. And so that these new ideas can be introduced and hopefully be brought up later.

The meetings that people host are not paid for by TCMAS. People open up their tanks and homes to, in some cases, complete strangers with only one known common interest. This club. They do it on their own dime. Like for my meeting on the 12th, I am providing some pizzas and soda. TCMAS is not paying for that, nor would I expect them to. It's my way of giving back to the club.

The money TCMAS gets from members fees goes to putting on events like the swaps, speaker events and the garage sale last summer. So yes everyone benefits from the people paying dues, even the people paying them. TCMAS bringing in more money means better speakers at the speaker events, which means more local and even national recognition for the club. That is a good thing for everyone right?

Uh yeah - total stud with that reply

Im done for tonight

The move going into place was well thought out by the BOD and the members at large

I love to hear thoughts and opinions from members but it is what it is and outside a business meeting to change the vote - it is done

Night y'all - please play nice - we as in BOD/MOD's are plenty tired and could use some sleep

Then it can't be a valid argument.

Claim: The changes will be beneficial to TCMAS

Evidence: People who want to have access to membership have to contribute in some way to the club before having access to these new features.

Warrant: Therefore, the limiting of some features will force people to dedicate themselves, thus increasing the participation and revenue of the club, having a positive effect on the club and all members who wish to participate in it.

I don't think you could top the speaker list we had at the last event :beerchug:

YES actually I can and plan to do so in April!!!!!

However due to the really low turnout for the speaker events (last was about 40) - I am not currently seeking speakers for any future speaker events

Considering our speaker events take easily more than half out budget - I think the money would be better spent going forward for our members in prizes, give-always and workshops

Huh? How can a scenario not be a valid argument? Before skydiving do we not play out scenarios as to what may happen?

I'm not sure. I decided not to pay the $30 for the skydiving club.

I have officially changed my avatar in honor of this thread. Ohh and yes workshops should count just like attending or hosting a meeting.

Uh not really, I went back and read the darn post and it was either involvement or not even relevant to my question. Can't give credit to just posting random post #'s.

Is it because one of the scenarios was that the chute didn't open?

I don't need no classifieds, I can just entertain myself here all night..lol!
