ArstenA's 6 Gallon Triangle (1 Viewer)

Sandsifter stars and gobies eat micro fauna which reside in the sndbed... they sift the sand looking for this fauna and in result the organic compounds are brought into the sand bed...

I'm guess I'm confused as to why you would think that the star would thrive in this environment. It sounds like that since they are sifting through the sand they are creating the opportunity for more "compounds" to grow or accumilate to then feed off of? Could you elaborate?

I retrieved this from Live Aquaria:
"Like other starfish, Astropecten polycanthus efficiently consumes mass amounts of detritus and uneaten foods. To foster its feeding habits, the Sand Sifting Sea Star should be kept in aquariums with large, deep sand bottoms of several inches in depth."

Most if not all starfish are opportunistic... however the sand sifters diet is micro organisms it finds on the sand.. they roam and bury themselves to eat the fauna... pop up and do it again... said my peace...

It is a sweet tank

curious as to why you would say this

Because they are not suitable for anything less than a 100+ gallon home aquarium with a DSB. They will make the sand barren and then slowly starve over the course of months.

Sand sifters feed off of detitrious, and generally require several inches of sandbed to thrive. Also ArstenA indicated that his feeding load was light, which in turn lessens the likelihood of waste build up for the star to then eat.
There are few starfish that eat detritus, most are either Carnivores or Herbivores, just like catfish in the fresh water trade, they don't like fish poo.

Sand-sifting starfish eat the infauna in your sand bed and they may eat detritus on occasion. But trusting any commercial website for info on a quite mis-understood animal is just asking for trouble.

I tried to send you a pm but your in box was full.

I could build another triangle tank, but I am seriously thinking of taking the one down at work.

I cleaned out my inbox, should be good to go now, sorry about that. I would be interested in it if you take it down.

After nearly six months of not touching the tank besides top off water... I cleaned it. The only thing in there is a frogspawn and some CUC. My son wanted the Nemos at home.

So I some what consider this a restart but hopefully I am cycled. We will see. I will give it a week or two to see what starts to grow back.

Then if all seems ok I will start to bring in some new corals.
