DarkSky's 220g Build (1 Viewer)

If you keep that pic as your avatar, it will be!!! ;)

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it!

A huge, huge thanks to @nrupaw, @Juskr and @abhishek for helping mount the light last night. We started early around 6PM and didn't get out of the house until 12:30 - between pizza, football and beer we finally got the fixture hung.

Unfortunately, it looks like three bulbs are toast from the dip in the water. ATI is working with me to replace those too.

Things are finally returning to normal, and there's no way anything else could go wrong...

In other news, SPS in the tank seem to be doing very well, everything is starting to encrust the plugs and growing. I'll be trying to get them in their final growing places once I get the new T5 bulbs in place.

Glad to hear your coral are doing good :)

Yeah! The only one that seems to be having trouble is the birds nest, I've had to hide it on the very edge of the aquarium because it was getting nuked on the sandbed prior to the move. I'm going to have to put it somewhere under an outcropping of rock I think.

Wow.... that's weird.... you ever find that other frag that fell of the plug... Lol

No, no idea where that bonsai went to. I'm hoping it'll show up, encrusted and growing out from a crack somewhere, but I doubt it. I did a water change before I left for vacation and scoured the entire sand bed - wasn't there.

Starting to think it just up and walked out of my aquarium.

I can always frag you another one lol

Update time!

Two new fish made it into the DT from QT since the last update (I think? Did I cover this already?) - a melanurus wrasse and a flame wrasse. Both are active and eating!

Two new additions to the QT - a royal gramma and a yellow coris wrasse.

I'm slowly placing corals on the rockwork, just letting them sit on the frag rack until they color up.

Parameters are super stable. This is probably the easiest build I've had, stability-wise.

I'm keeping everything at the following:

450 ppm Ca
8.5-9.0 dKh Alk
1350 ppm Mg
0-5 ppm NO3
0.00 - 0.01 ppm PO4

I'm feeding relatively heavy for the bio load, a cube of mysis and a small chunk of LRS. Supplementing with pellets when I walk by and the fish beg. The refugium is really keeping everything in check, I've been pulling out a handful of chaeto every week.

For maintenance, I've only been having to clean the sides of the tank about once a week before enough film algae builds up. I've got one hermit crab, one pom-pom, and about 5-6 trochus snails in the DT. Might have to start thinking about more CUC.

After earning a poor HSSR, I got around to finishing my electrical box for the build.

Still waiting on a controller. The excited electrical box has room for a head unit and two power bars - for whatever type of controller I end up getting. For now, the fire hazard is no longer an issue.

On the tank side of things, everything is going well. Here's a crappy actinic shot.

and a normal one.

The SPS are encrusting and growing, colors are holding, some brownies I got are starting to color up. I took in @RSnodgrass 's clam - I've been trying to place it in an area it will be happy in. Right now I have it dead center under the lights, getting about 300 par. We'll see how it does there.

Overdue for an update!

I had a pretty bad STN event and lost almost everything. I dropped my phosphates with GFO which were at 200+ppb according to my Hanna ULR meter. After a few days, it was down to 40 ppb. Over the next few
weeks every acro slowly lost tissue and died. I did just about a 100% water change to no avail.

Well, now I'm at decent parameter levels, 10dkh, 420 Ca, 1300 mg, 10ppm no3, .08ppm p04 (which is still higher than I'd like) so we start again. I came back from Florida recently with some frags, we'll see how they do.

I also just moved my new fish from QT to the DT. A purple tang, hippo tang, yellow eye kole tang, emperor angel, and a filimented wrasse.

IMG_20190119_122249.jpg

The issue: I have a yellow tang I put in the tank last month. I figured with all the new tangs he'd be distracted and any potential aggression would be diffused, but I was wrong. The yellow has been chasing the slightly smaller purple tang almost non stop - there was a short break when I placed mirrors around the tank, but the yellow quickly figured that out and resumed the chase. I've been keeping them separated with a stick while feeding so the purple can eat, but he's relentless. Not sure what I can do here aside from removing one of them, and if I do that, is someone else just going to start chasing anyway?

Can you wall a section off so they can look but not touch for awhile? That's worked for me.

Yeah, I should have went with the acclimation box for the tangs. But I probably would have needed to catch the yellow since he was picking on everyone when I added them - now he's just focused on the purple. This morning it is a bit more subdued however - he isn't relentlessly chasing the purple, but only when the purple swims up to him. I'll just keep feeding heavily and hope they realize there is enough food to go around.

I have had a similar problem like this before with having tangs and multiple flame angels. What I ended up doing was placing the aggressive fish into one of those cheap clear cricket holders with the colored plastic breathable tops. Then put a mag float in the container and stuck it down near the bottom of the tank for a while so they could all hang out together with zero aggression. It seemed to work pretty dang well and cost about $8 for the container. Now I keep multiple of all sizes to accommodate for different size fish and whatnot! Hope that helps a little

That sounds like a good idea. I'll have to figure out how to catch that yellow tang.

i have 2 large acclimation box that am not using . One doesn’t have a lid .
You are welcome to take them man !

Regards,
Abhishek
I will shoot you a text tomorrow. The yellow is relentless!
