120g Acrylic Acropora Addiction (1 Viewer)

Boy you miss 2 feedings of frozen in a week and Nitrate and Phosphate are undetectable. And I fed a huge chunk of Reef Frenzy this morning!

They have been reading very low since the upgrade and I’ve been trying to feed heavy (for me) but will prob need to get the ammonia dosing back online to keep it consistent. Or open up the hole on the auto feeder so it feeds more than a tiny bit lol.

Observation: tabling and stag horn acros love very low nutrient environment (n03 .5-1 and po4 .01) and do noticeably better, while bottlebrush acros like Tenuis do better with higher nutrients (n03 10-20 & po4 .05-.1)

So having acro’s on both sides in the same tank makes keeping nutrients a very small margin to balance and you do it well Sr.

I think it’s more of a rollercoaster where some do well for a while and then other do well, if that makes sense.

That’s crazy. I’m trying to remember, is your fish load still pretty low for the bigger tank? I don’t recall, but do you think that’s part of the low nutrient issue?

3 tangs, 6 chromis, 3 clowns, a hawkfish, and a partridge in a pear tree. I guess by sheer inches of fish it is low. I can only hope they get fat and grow because I dare not upset the apple cart. Everyone is happy and coexisting and brother, I know how lucky I am for that.

Good thing I bought a bigger skimmer that I haven’t even got wet yet 😂

Increased feeding of frozen and pellets, started dosing ammonium bicarbonate 20ml/day and still 0.0 nitrate and 0.01 phosphate sheesh!

Just curious what does sodium bicarbonate do that dosing phosphate and nitrate directly doesn’t. I’m obviously still learning

Ammonium bicarbonate (ammonia) is just essentially dosing what corals would get from more fish urea. They can more efficiently use it than nitrate but ultimately serves the same purpose.

So in theory you would not have to raise phosphate and or nitrate by dosing ammonia

Noticed huge dip in pH and found Ultra Reef (Sicce pump) DC motor block gave up the ghost this week. Was used for like 14 months and then cleaned and shelved for about 2 months during the tank transition. Motor block indicating dry run protection but there is no blockage. Fortunately I have the unused AC pump on the shelf ready to go.

Further supports my ongoing stance that DC pumps trade off the noise and reliability of AC pumps for quiet but more points of failure. Hat to say it but that puts Jebao ahead of Sicce in my narrow window of DC pump experience. If used as a return pump it’s critical to have a backup for scenarios such as this. Quality AC pumps are a little noisy but just keep going.

I was watching a podcast on YouTube and reps said the same thing … as long as you keep it wet it goes on forever but drying it out and storing takes a toll on it somehow? I think they were also talking about the MP wetside…. Which sucks because I always have the dry one waiting to swap the dirty one out but apparently that’s wear and tear on it

Cowabummer.

My big Derasa clam I’ve had for 4 years decided to somehow break her hinge. Most likely a death sentence. I’ve seen some videos and talk online of making a prosthetic hinge so I tried to no avail unfortunately. Super glued a strip of fabric underneath the hinge but it goes loose when the clam opens and then the halves go all offset.

One guy even 3d printed these mounts for a rubber band to act as the ligaments but I won’t be able to do all that.

Probably have to toss her out before she does and nukes the tank. She undoubtedly plays a huge role in my filtration so I’ll have to keep a close eye on my nutrients and prob stop dosing ammonia and phosphate.
