3 Foot Nano Tank (1 Viewer)

New Clownfish

Huge lack of updates so I'll get everything caught up.

This was my first clownfish "Steve" He was originally in my 5.5 gallon at work and was transfer over 2 weeks ago. He was having a great time and 3 days later jumped out the back and fell behind the stand. Sadness :tears:

Then last week Sun I went to the local fish store with my wife to pick out a new fish and the first coral. The new fish is Neo. He is misbared on one side and completely missing a bar on the other. The first coral is a gold torch. With regular lights it looks pale green but under blue LEDs only it is definitely orange.

Diatom bloom then hit pretty hard that week so I ordered a cleanup crew off reefcleaners.org I ordered the 10 gallon quick crew and it came with sooooo many snails. The larger ones were close to the number in the item description but there were 10X the amount of dwarf ceriths. They quickly dug themselves into the sandbed and made fairly quick work of the diatoms in the next few days. There was a little left on Friday as you will see in the next images but I imagine most of it will be gone this week.

First Corals

Thursday after work I went around town to a few local reefers houses (90ct and Montiporalover) and bought frags from large colonies and frag tanks that they had. Here is the tank as of Friday.

I dont know the name of this one but I thought it was the coolest piece and paid for the whole colony. Anyone have an ID?

A few heads of frogspawn

A blue rimmed green monti cap from 90ct, originally a tyree coral. I would still like to get one more cap to complete the collection. An ORA all purple version. The other is an orange/red cap on the right rock that hopefully will become more colorful.

An encrusting piece called Purple Haze.

So, what do you guys think?

I know :lookaround:

It just looks so sleek without one. I may do a clear mesh cover and just keep it on during the nights and weekends while I am not at work.

yeah I understand aesthetics and it does look very nice but perhaps the clear mesh won't be that bad when you consider the possible livestock that may be saved

I've been super busy at work with projects. Tank hasn't been neglected I just dont have enough time to get my DSLR to work and shoot a bunch of nicer photos.

Inside you should see the latest fish to join the tank. A Radiant Wrasse, both cause its a sweet looking fish and because it helps in eating montipora eating nudis!!

I had to pull all of my montis out and had them in a separate small container for 2 weeks. I dipped them every few days and changed the water as often as possible. Almost every morning I would find 1-2 more of the buggers and pull them off with tweezers. Eventually my pink monticap was getting more damage from the repeated dips and being in a separate container of water so I decided to thoroughly inspect every piece of coral 2-3 more times, brush off anything that resembled anything strange and put them back in the tank. I lost the entire bottom of my monti spongodes so I ended up breaking off all of the good branches and attaching them to the large rock on the right. It used to be a really cool baseball size colony. Hopefully one day it will encrust over the rock and become better than what it was. The pink monti lost a lot of its tissue from the ordeal and you can see the white skeleton showing. The remaining rim has held strong and is recovering.

It's only a matter of time before the radiant wrasse and the blenny jump. You really need to cover it or find new homes for those fish.

BRS screen with black screen frames dude. Will look good and take care of losing your fish.

Hey, tank looks great!

Thanks Adam!

So did u get the sea wave accelerator? I'm interested in seeing how well it works

I haven't been using the nano spinners if thats what youre asking. They take a lot more pressure to spin than I thought so screwing them in just restricts flow. I thought about doing a SCWD at my Y to pulse the water back and forth, but am hesitant based on the number of people that say they fail.

Some updates since its been awhile. I was more or less just embarrassed to share my troubles.

I lost a few of the corals I had sadly during the summer, things I either bought from 90ct or the spring swap. They were just losing color and losing tissue over a few months. Others that hung in there just werent as colorful as they once were. I lost all of my cool montis to nudibranches. I still found a massive one this morning. These :swear: need to die!!

I attended the fall swap and picked up a small anemone and some lps corals hoping if I didn't get an SPS it would stay alive... but a week or so later and the corals were starting the descend like all the others.

I couldnt figure out what I was doing wrong so I just took a step back and went back to the basics. Cut my GAC and GFO usage by about 1/2. Completely took the sump and return pump apart for a much needed cleaning - wow there was a lot of gunk built up inside. After everything was vinegar soaked and cleaned I reassembled everything and did a bunch of large water changes over a week. All of my corals were losing color and the tissue loss was always on the tops. So I then raised my light to almost a foot above the water and blocked some of the white LEDs (I dont have dimming control so this was the next best thing).

And the next day all of the corals I got from the swap, maze brain, acans were open and the flesh was puffed. Fast forward til now and my corals are finally looking nice again. I will still have to wait on the light adjustment to see if my psammocora, frogspawn, brain and other regain their deep green coloration. It looks like its heading that way at least.

I've been more persistent with my water changes, sometimes doing it twice a week and doing a few gallons more each time. I want to stock up on a few more corals over Christmas break if everything in my tank stays healthy. I don't want to share pictures quite yet. It looks a little sad to only see a few corals and the same fish when the tank has been set up for months.

I had had the same problem with fading color on my corals in the 10g I had set-up. Never figured out what happened but I'm glad you've saved yours.

Sad to hear about the Nudis. :swear:
