3 Foot Nano Tank (1 Viewer)

I just love this tank :beerchug:
A happy hour sounds like a great idea.

This is a great tank!

Thanks guys! I posted in the meeting list about possibly having 3 meetings one month - probably the end of March when there is a large gap but haven't gotten a response from the BOD or much interest yet. It might just be a get together instead of an official meeting.

Id also say go with an orange plate coral. I just picked my first one up from Chad/Jen and I love it. Glows like crazy but I cant take a picture of it to save my life. Im going to try your JPEG trick in a few minutes! Thanks for the tip.

Id also be interested in a TCMAS happy hour. I live in the warehouse district and have been wanting to meet more club members, I just cant seem to make it to a meeting. Id also love to see that tank of yours, I love the scale of it. It looks like it could be 6 feet long but that would be one giant blenny!

Eric, did you ever figure out what went wrong with your Firefish? Are you going to give another a try? What was the fate of your hermits?

Also I saw a fish the other day I will absolutely have in my tank one day but for some reason I also thought of yours. Check out the Purple Tilefish. Super cool looking fish. Your tank may be too small though.

Im going for a completely clean sandbed, maybe a clam but thats really all I want on there. So Orange Acans, that Lepso coral or and Orange Torch are the things I'm looking for. I had dougers get one with his large order so hopefully I can add that soon.

As for the Happy Hour, I'll PM the BOD again and see if I can schedule a day, otherwise I'll just do a little thing with a few people if they want to check it out some weekday evening.

I dont have a definitive cause, but I'm thinking it was just in transit too long and probably too much of a shock from acclimation. I bought it still in the bag from Quality Marine through Murray. It was probably in that bag for over 24 hrs til it was in my system. And the salinity in the bag was super low when I tested it. So I tried to raise it over a long period of time but I keep mine at 1.026 which is on the higher end for a fish that was almost in hypo salinity.

I was going to get the half price helfrichi from Tonka Petco but another member snatched that up before I could get over there. Jason said he had the fish in his system for over a month so I figured I would have a good success rate with that one.

The hermits are all still in the tank and doing their duties. They were probably just doing their job and eating the already dead fish.

The Tilefish looks very cool. I'm looking for a unique brightly colored active swimming fish that stays small. The more common options I'm thinking about are a Royal Gramma or Flame Angel. If you can think of anything else in the Purple, Red, or Blue coloration that would be awesome.

Really nice looking tank and I like the picture quality you are able to achieve under LEDs, keep up the good work :agree:

Tilefish is cool, I have one ;) He's too big for this nano! One needs an even tighter lid for one of those than you do for a wrasse or a diamond goby. I swear, I could sit on the couch across the room and it could reach me if it wanted to jump. I won't leave the canopy open for even a little bit. I rebuilt my canopy specifically for that fish after my first one found a way through the screen I had rigged up. If he gets through what I have set up now, I won't try again.

Orchid dottyback may be cool, grammas etc as already mentioned. Only thing I thought of that wasn't immediately obvious was a blue assessor. Every time I saw them in Fritz's tank at his house under the LED's or in the 180G display at SWE, I told myself I had to have one....I ran out of space before I finally bought one. Of course, now that I look, they appear to be expensive too!

Another good option for your tank, though it perches more than it swims in the water column, would be a flame hawkfish. I don't think you have any shrimp. From what I understand, the personalities on these fish are something to behold...and they are a vibrant red. I also regret not having one of these, but I didn't want it to outcompete my mandarins for food...they eat all the critters (pods etc) too I hear.

Hider for me. But I have a LOT of BIG fish. Consult with Chad V. He has some in clients tanks. Also, MRBILL currently has one and it may swim more than mine. Mine comes out consistently when fed....so I see it at least 6 times a day, LOL

Thanks! I've been following your build for awhile. Love the new anthias and that orange/teal favia!

Ya I like to leave the top off for a few hours some days. After my last fish jumped I vowed to have it on every night and anytime I leave for lunch though. So a truly active jumper is a little scary, especially if the tilefish grows to be 5-6" long. The patterns on the hawk are very cool. I do stare at the ones at SWE sometimes. My blenny does plenty of perching or hiding in his holes though. I'd like something similar to the clown that is always moving around.

The gramma or less aggressive dottybacks will probably be my choice. I'd always like to have something a little more unique. My co-workers would think the gramma is cool even though I know its very common, it would take a true hobbyist to see the uniqueness in a gramma dejongi though.

I also love the coloration on the Japanese Pygmy angels...

I have big dreams lol

I would love to get some angels in my tank, soon ;)

That Orange/teal favia is actually an Acan from what I was told and from the looks of it.. appears to be Acan.. what type? dunno but I really like the coloration.. right now its a little bleached

Settled on a Purple Dottyback.

I'm hoping he is on the more peaceful side. When he was added he scoped out the tank and all the nooks and crannies. The Blenny and Clown quickly held their dominance over their favorite spots so I'm hoping they all get along and have their own places.

And using James suggestion I picked up a Leptastrea coral from SWE.

Its an interesting piece as its very similar to a tightly grouped zoa colony. When I first added it all of the polyps were retracted and it glowed bright orange, but as it became more comfortable all the tiny purple edging puffed up and covered up a majority of the cool orange centers :(
The coral has completely encrusted on the plug, going all the way around and covers the nub on the bottom. Would it be possible for someone with a fragging saw to cut that bottom nub off?

Your tank is awesome and I cant wait to see a new FTS! All the fish you have in the 12 gallon reminds me I should get a few more in my 37.. lol

Thanks Kveekx! I'm probably at the limit for fish, or just past it. But I've been keeping the tank a lot more stable with larger diligent water changes every week so I'm hoping it continues to stay that way. And more fish just adds more movement and interesting things to watch :D

If you'd like to cut the peg/nub off the frag plug, a good pair of bone cutters or wire cutters will do it well.

LowersMyBP works downtown and is going to loan me his dremel in exchange for the nub. Its completely encrusted, just a little faded from not receiving any light while in the frag rack. So hopefully it cuts off cleanly and then does well for him.

I like the new additions, fits your color scheme real well.

Looking forward to the next FTS or heck why don't you just set up a web cam so we can all look at your tank while we're at work? :)

OMG I've wanted to do this since I set it up since its right next to a computer. I even had the hope of it capturing a picture a day for a sweet timelapse, but extra funds just haven't been there. As soon as I have personal spending money it usually goes to corals or gifts for the wife.
