3 Foot Nano Tank (1 Viewer)

Playing around with Blue and UV only light using my DSLR. If anyone was watching the last hour of my stream yesterday I tried to show this with my iphone but it just didn't show the colors correctly at all.

Great color on a challenging subject. Are you the setting white point in camera or Lightroom? It's so tough not to blow out the blue channel trying to get all the fluorescence (without a barrier filter).

I used those blue blocker glasses in front of the lens. After taking that picture I'm excited to get an actual threaded filter. I've done it a few different ways for normal shots. I've usually had the best success with manual white balancing to a 100% white / 100% blue intensity photo. Then dropping the whites back to 50% or so. I then take the photo in RAW+Jpeg. The jpeg usually looks better as the white balance is baked into the photo and the RAW clips the blue to max and looks bad. Even in Lightroom the blue channel is at 50,000 and cant be saved. In this photo, even with blue at 100% and UV at 100% I somehow was able to use AWB and RAW while the yellow barrier was in place. As soon as the yellow was removed the camera completely freaked out and couldnt take the photo to save its life.

That's why I was curious, the only way I can get a photo like that is with a barrier filter. Sometimes I think that color temperature slider in Lightroom is way too limited. Maybe the intensity of the blue light is always going to be so much stronger than the fluorescence that's emitted from the corals that it's always going to overflow the blues, and filtering them out is just the only option for now.
 
Quick question, what camera and set up do you use to stream the tank? im thinking of setting something like this up so i can view the tank while im away for work or for the military. Id rather not set up a computer just to run a webcam. Also i have a full apex hooked into this tank so i wonder if i can run some kind of camera using that? Not sure..

The livestream app on my iphone. So thats not really practical for remote viewing. If you want it to monitor yourself look into getting a dropcam, or nestcam. They stream 24/7 using your wifi newtork needing only a power source. No computer or usb connection required compared to a webcam. I don't have an apex but there maybe be a webcam that links directly to the apex if you don't go the drop or nest route.
 
Ordered some fish from BlueZooAquatics last week. I scheduled a Tuesday delivery. FedEx messed up all BlueZoo orders and they all got stuck in Indianapolis for an extra day.

Today the package showed up and I expected dead fish.
Nope. All fish survived in their tiny bags for over 40 hours!

Royal Gramma, Flameback Angel, and Sunburst Anthias all about 1" in size.

They have since acclimated for just over an hour and are in the tank. Will try to get actual pictures of the fish in the next few days when the lights go back on.

An aside, because I don't know if it receives enough attention, nor am I certain it should. However, after 40 hours in the bag, I would assume that the ammonia spike once finally exposed to oxygen would have been quite severe. I wonder if a long acclimation would have been the best course of action?

There are chemistry folks that talk about how the low O2 suppresses the ammonia toxicity until you open the bag. Once opened, it becomes important to get them out of that water. I don't know, will be watching to see your results for anecdotal confirmation or rebuttal of that theory....of course, there is no control for other factors, so it will be mostly meaningless.

I do, however, believe that out of the bag and out of the water as quickly as possible is the right method in these situations.
 
Per Kevin at LiveAquaria it's basically 1. get the temperatures equal (with bag closed) and then 2. yea get them out of the bag 'quickly' once you cut them open. Challenge is never knowing what the salinity is in the bag, always start low I guess (1.018 etc.) as fish can always quickly go that way but up hill takes the time.

I know you know what you are doing but.....is there a game plan for these fish? They all have much larger "recommended" tank sizes.

Ya pretty much nothing is "recommended" for nano aquariums except tiny gobies. I want some swimming fish. These are all small fish and they that don't move a whole lot from their usual hovering positions. The ones that do at least have 3 feet of swimming space.

If any get over 3-4" I'd probably sell them off but since they are all 1" in size except for the Midas it will be awhile.

I still really want it. Kevin hasn't gotten back to me about catching his or selling any of the others he told me he had. If it goes up for sale I'd still consider getting it and selling the flameback.
 
Haven't posted in awhile. Kevin did get back to me that the Venustus was caught and ready for me if I wanted it. I said yes and expected the fish in a few days. I made arrangements to sell my flameback to Jason so there wouldn't be any angel issues. The day the angel was going to be shipped Kevin was worried the fish too stressed out for shipping and delayed shipment for a week. So that day eventually came and I inquired when the fish would arrive. The purposed ship date was today for delivery tomorrow. Since that only gives me one day to observe before the weekend I delayed it until next week Monday so I can make sure it's eating and doing well for a whole week straight. So come Tuesday I hope to share this cool addition.
 
Sounds like you could use a temporary/QT at home.

BTW, the flameback has settled in and explores the entire 120gal.
 
Even the magazine was a Venustus


This has been the largest box I've ever received, let alone for a single fish. It was also at least sextuple bagged.





Fish is doing well but all the nights are off and hes hanging out under the overhanging so there wont be any nice pictures of him in the tank for a few days.

It's even better than what I remembered it to be. I definitely have to make a trip over to check out your tank.
