Trident has been released!!! You can get one starting at midnight tonight (if you are lucky).

Also I'm now off NDA so ask me anything.

Definitely questions for you :-

1. Do we have to do Ca and Mg tests once a day to do 2 Alk tests in 24 hours ? I would hate that as even in a choked acropora system , the Ca and Mg values hardly change especially with a Calcium reactor . So why test in 24 hours ?

2. How painful was the maintenance ? Can you tel us anything about sending in the unit every 18-24 months that Terrence talked about for servicing ? Not a deal breaker for me but just want to know how much of a hassle is it especially with 200$ for servicing .

3. If I wish , can I schedule the Alk tests along with Ca and Mg to be done once in 2-3 days or even 7 days rather than everyday ?

4. How much of reagents will be available for purchase before hand as I would hate to run out of reagents and then it’s out fo stock everywhere else as it often happens with much anticipated product like these especially where reagents can last 1-2 months ?

It would help me decide whether to invest in trident or not with these answers

Wanna buy a couple more Hanna's :)

I wonder how many Tridents the local stores got.

Could use some more reagent.

Terrence was saying reagents were 45$ a month. Is that based on 3-4 tests a day? How often do you plan to test? I test alk 1-2 a week, which for my tank has been plus or minus a tenth (low/medium demand mixed tank). And big water change every 14 days. I don’t see the huge improvement I would see with trident at this time. But I do want more apex :)

$45 is for a two month supply, which I assume is at a rate of 4 alk, 2 ca, 2 mg tests a day.

1. Minimum testing is 2 Cal/Mg and 4 Alk tests a day. Two reasons for this. First it keeps the system accuracy up. If you drop below that you would not get as precise results. Second, your parameters vary more than you probably think. Alk in particular will follow a day/night usage cycle. Testing that often also allows you to catch issues before they cause problems. Just doing things like adding a frag or vacuuming the sand bed will affect things.

2. We have not had to do the maintenance. They will have a DYI option that will be under $100 but recommend against it due to the ease of messing it up. For the send in option it will be $150 - $200 (price not set yet). They are also talking about a an exchange option so you don't have to be without the Trident while being serviced. Keep your box if you might be using the send in option.

3. They have preset test schedules that work well. Lowest is 2/4, next is 4/8. You do have to do the minimum to keep the Trident running with precision. You can also easily kick off manual additional tests whenever you want.

4. Each reagent pack will last you about 2 months if you run the minimum testing. Shelf life is 1 year. Only Neptune will be selling reagents initially due to needing to make sure they are fresh and shipped right. Initially they will limit orders to 2 packs per order to make sure everyone can get them when needed.

You know you want one. In the short time I've had one my tank has really stabilized. Corals are looking healthier than ever. Add in the DOS control and you have two of your major parameters locked down and closely monitored. It should not only provide good long term consistency, but is great insurance against tank crashes. It also helps with lazy tester syndrome. "I'll test next week, things don't change that much in a week". Four weeks later, "How did my Alk get down to 6"?

$45 will last you about 2 months at minimum testing. They are calling it a 1 month supply to estimate on the safe side. I use to think my parameters did not vary much until I saw the results of multiple tests a day. The other thing you'll see is this is way more precise than manual tests. When we first got them many of us were reporting back that it did not match our test kits. Guess what, Trident didn't match because it was right. Once calibrated this thing is an order of magnitude more accurate than test kits.

O yes, need it or not, I will probably end up with one at some point. Love having the control. Maintenance kinda sounds like a PITA. Just added DOS and 2 part, and like the control of supplements.

Agree as much as I try... I figure there is some error on the hannas and myself. My Ca test never seems to be stable, 50-70 point swing over 3 days of testing drives me nuts.

Thank you for answering the questions . It helps me understand a few key points that affects my decision to go for it or not .

So if I understand you correctly , the multiple tests are necessary for accuracy of the system . Is there no calibration involved so that I can have accuracy without multiple tests ?

There is calibration, but they say not to calibrate until it breaks in after 48 hours or 2 weeks (I wasn't clear on which number was recommended).

The Trident comes with calibration fluid.

I'm in the same boat as @HouseofStark, the price and monthly cost just seems to be way too high but I'll probably end up buying one eventually anyway.

There is calibration, that will get the accuracy set. The requirement of multiple tests a day are about precision. They are needed to keep the system precise. Even if that were not the case, there are distinct benefits to having multiple tests a day in keeping your system stable. Plus if you add the DOS control you need that much feedback to the dosing control.

For ongoing costs you can figure ~$180 every 18 months and $45 every 2/m. That works out to ~$33/m to run this minus whatever you currently spend on Cal/Alk/Mg testing.

You may have just answered my question, I thought I saw something about the dos system automatically calibrating itself continuously when used on this. Is that true
