Tacking on late here(sorry!), but I'd go less sand as well, if only because water changes on those are a HUGE pain in the rear to me.
If anyone has figured out a good method, I'm willing to listen.

You should take a look at the Japanese style spotlighting for reef tanks. You can have the lights feet away from the tank with a good reflector to focus the light into a nice beam to illuminate parts of the tank.
