Langer firstly the install was superb, you made me look like a rock star, stain is a near perfect match, all the wood is a match... this was laid out better then an Ikea table.

Seriously very happy that I entrusted you with my tank cabinets and I got my fix and pride by putting it together (mostly). The local guys had no clue what I was talking about and even being nearly 4hrs away you made it happen seamlessly.

On a side this is kinda like "cars made in America" right? I mean... sure you stained/varnished it, meticulously planned it all out, package all the proper screws, cut nearly all the wood, placed the hinges so perfectly that any door fit anywhere...
BUT...
I did put the final pieces together so I get to say I made it right? (o:
 
Quandary of the day... we had to shorten the metal stand to fit the doorway however, I already had the sump built. Now I only have 7 1/2" of clearance to get a skimmer in unless I plumb it through the side.

I'm not a fan of skimmers externally so the only safety idea I could come up with is a large emergency hose drilled in the upper side of the collection cup in case it gets too full.

Opinions needed... I'm not a fan of buying a skimmer but it's looking like there are no alternatives and I doubt there are good ones with a 7 1/2" diameter.

How about an external skimmer (recirculating)? I'm not sure you'd find a good skimmer for the tank under 7 1/2 diameter unless you ran two.

Impressive amount of work for a weekend. Looks like you never slept. The stand looks nice and ties into the room well. Do you have anything to cover the backside of the overflows to hide the pipe, such as matching wood or black vinyl?

Langer made some 1/4" removable panels that I'm cutting to size and cover the back overflows, I'll add photos once we tackle that part but I'm also adding a blind that can be pulled down between the two overflows for privacy.
 
Could I put some kind of float switch on a collection cup/bucket that will hold up to skimmate?

Sounds like you're referring to a Skimmate Locker - I have one and absolutely love it! Also have the Swabbie with the set up : )

Picked up a couple of these to try on one side and see what they do. I was going to make my own out of PCV couplings (may still) but I'd like to see how these perform on one side of the tank while the other has normal outputs. Per their site it seems the more flow you crank through them they better they perform.

Then if I can think of how to secure a coupling in a fairly clean way I'd like to then put them on the other side and see how they compare.

Their 3d printed parts have nice resolution. Interesting, I would have thought they'd use a ® when mentioning Loc-Line® on their site.
 
They claim they are durable, typical 3d parts are only good for about a year in a tank I'm told so will see.

What's an ®?
 
I'll be curious how this holds up for you. How were you going to to make something similar with pvc couplings?

Pseudo similar... all of these pre made devices narrow at the output which in part seems to be purely aesthetic for a smaller profile.

What I'd do is suspend a coupling of 1-1.25" around the end of the loc-line. Ultimately having a gap for ambient water to be pulled through. How to attach it is my trouble but I'm thinking some kind of thin plastic strips I can glue in place.

I'd guess that both the size of the gap and how far forward the pipe is suspended could make equal impact on how much flow increase is attained.
 
This evening I celebrated two victories, tomorrow is aquascaping day, Sunday is pressure test day.

The price was right... TDS is a bit high around 5 but I need to cycle so who cares. Also no additives with this outfit. 68 jugs

The aquascaping appears to be done. I've left lots of vertical room for frags and several of my existing rocks.
