120g Acrylic Acropora Addiction (2 Viewers)

just wondering, what type of overflow you are going to use?
normally ppl have the overflow tee cut into the side panel.

Not sure if you noticed, but it might be tough to see the fish and corals. Is it like top viewing only?

😇

Somehow I missed this was a peninsula tank - love it even more now!

“Peninsula” but it will be against a wall. That allows me to maintain leaking bulkheads and have a nice clear back against our powder blue wall which will give a nice “endless ocean” effect.

The black box is external overflow

what are the two holes in the top corners for? Awesome looking tank.

holes for power head cords.

@clownnut oh I see what you were saying now. The 2 holes in the back wall are for the modular marine weir box. I had them set it up like this so I can remove and clean bubble algae from the weir vs permanent teeth.

cool. :) i like removable parts :) I can't wait to see it up and running.

Anyone have an opinion on this? @jlanger ?

I figured for strength with my laminated “2x4”s pocket holes and glue would be stronger than biscuits.

I did pocket holes on each side of the 2x4 treating each board as an individual 3/4”

My opinion is that this stand is going to be overbuilt. I am guessing the tank is sitting on the floor with a small mountain of equipment around it. I can't wait for it to start coming together.

Since the biscuits are not through the layers of plywood, I think you made the better choice! Either way you are relying on the glue.

For sure it’s moving at a glacial pace. Not a ton of equipment enshrining the tank of the floor as a lot will be reused from current tank.

Sump, ATO, and an LED bar are the only new stuff at this point.

I'm assuming that you're going to apply a skin of 1/2" or thicker material to the frame, so you're going to be good.
If you wanted the frame to be even more structurally sound, you could've used lap joints to tie the verticals with the horizontals. It'd be a fun puzzle to assemble (look up Japanese joinery sometime), but definitely overkill once the frame is skinned.

I would debate the strength of biscuits versus pocket screws. The screws are just clamps holding the pieces together until the glue cures, so the only bonded surfaces are those that butt together. With biscuits, you've increased the surface areas that are being glued and created a stronger bond since the biscuits are bonded to both pieces.

For sure I thought about half-lapping some of the joints but decided against it for fear I would screw up measurements adding that much complexity to the laminated pieces. To get them all perfectly matching I cut them long, laminated, and then did the final cuts matched with a stop block.

And yes I’m skinning with 1/2” oak that will have big laps at every corner so that makes me feel better.

Fair point with the biscuits and surface area. I do have a biscuit joiner and employ it when needed but I watched a few (I know-subjective) YouTube vids comparing joint strength and pocket screws were close or better.

And absolutely without question- Japanese joinery is the coolest! There a couple Japanese furniture builders I follow and it’s amazing the stuff they do with no glue! And those sliding tablesaws? 😍

Ok things are coming together a little quicker, got all 4 legs glued and screwed. The center supports will go in when I attached the top frame.

The benefit of my labor with the plywood is really shining now vs 2x4 pine. Everything is dead square every angle.

IMG_8036.jpegWow massive change of plans.

Finally got around to getting a wall mount for our TV, and when I moved the tv wife says “wow I like it without the tv there, you should just put the new aquarium there”. She’s a genius. We never watch tv anyway other than letting our son watch Sesame Street so it gives me motivation to get a vibey basement den going.

The spot where the TV is dead flat, and possibly the strongest part of the floor in the whole house. The living room is wider than the dining room so the tank would partially rest right on top of the 6” beam that holds the whole house up so I don’t think I’ll even need extra support.

I need to moved some wires around to get the 20 amp dedicated circuit to the tank but no biggie.

This will make the tank switch an absolute breeze!IMG_8037.jpeg

I feel like this would be an excellent opportunity to just set up 2 tanks!
Haha one thing I’ve learned being in the hobby this long is most people that set up multiple tanks burn out and leave the hobby. Even my frag tank is coming down once this operation is done to minimize maintenance.

That space needs a bigger tank… something like the 6’ 180 Newz001 has for sale. [emoji12]
Dude you’re telling me! But this will fit the space super nice and be less obtrusive for the size of my house.
