I did a thing…. IM SR-120 incoming (1 Viewer)

Well what I have for fish are in. I added the clowns a couple days after leveling the tank. Was watching the numbers on the water close all week and decided to put the whole family back together. Funny thing is my pistol shrimp and watchmen goby found their spot under the rock structure that was in the old tank. I’m going to leave the lights off for a few more weeks and let things settle out. Hopefully the good bacteria keeps growing and I can avoid some of the ugly stage!

Stock list at this point:
Mocha clown
Naked clown
Bangi X2
Hippo tang
Yellow watchmen goby (turned grey)

Well its been a few days im happy to report all my fish that were moved to the main tank are doing great!

I have a few more sitting in quarantine right now being watched. I don't use copper unless its 100% necessary. I use polylab which is coral safe.

New fish list
Male carpenter flasher wrasse
Yellow/purple wrasse
Yellow clown goby ( nephew said i had to save him)
Biota yellow tang kind of a rescue as he came from a home with mean tank mates
Fire shrimp
Cleaner shrimp

Next round i cant decide if it will be a powder blue, brown, or if i get another Achilles for this tank.

been a couple weeks! Life’s been busy winterizing boats and skis but I managed to do some work on the tank also. Ive got two fish in the QT system waiting to make friends in the big tank. I got the refugium light mounted about a week ago. The cheato has doubled so it must be working. I have placed my refugium light and skimmer on a wifi outlet to turn on for 8 hours overnight. Seems to be doing the trick! Skimmer cup fills a little everyday, but when I look at it in the morning it’s not skimming so the tank must not be dirty enough for 8 hours yet. Raised the lights about 2 1/2” inches had a few hot spots so that should take care of that. Next mystery is why I’m getting salt and splash over just on this end…. I’ve moved the algae grazer down thinking maybe the fish were splashing just enough to cause it.

Side note I’ve been talking with innovative marine about a custom tank. 70L X 48W X 17H with an external overflow on one end (peninsula style) that size would allow me to use 2 aps stands back to back

really impressed with you cord management. You're welcome to come over and give me some tips any time.

Well I’ve been doing some modifications to the running gear. This filter caddy is a nice concept, but with the risers and ability to run the water level higher you can not get the water to run quietly. It’s also a PITA to change the filter floss every couple of days. So I re-worked some files I found to add some lips and a flow ramp for the water to run down! It’s as close to silent going through that part as you can get. The rest of the filter media is on a rack in the bottom about 2 inches from the bottom. I feel like this may actually work better as there was a lot of space where water could get around the media and now it can’t.

Pros and cons for the week!
My dendro, suns, black light torch are doing great! The bad is even with having the lights off almost 3 months to avoid the “ugly” stage…. It looks like I’m still going to get the ugly stage!

Did a little work today. Made a sleeve to slide in the filter column where I have the refugium light. Blocks all the light so there’s no bleed through. You can only see it up top as I don’t have the filter cup in there.

Well a bit of an upsetting morning. Moved my little Naso into the big tank yesterday evening. Woke this morning to find him stuck to the powerhead. It looks to have pulled his eye out. I was sure he was dead but when I grabbed him his tail moved. I quickly moved him back into the small tank. I bet he doesn’t make it.

Guess next on my list is fish guards for the power heads. Although idk if it would have helped.

Sorry, that’s sad for sure.

What sort of powerhead was it, power level if adjustable, and anything you think could ah e been done to prevent it other than the fish guards?

I've never seen a healthy fish get stuck to a powerhead. They are usually ill and not swimming well if that happens.

They are Jebao mlw-30’s I have them set on the lowest level already at 30% they move a ton of water.

I would typically agree with this. This guy was healthy and swimming like a champ in the other tank. I’ve done some reading on these power heads and it seems this is an issue some people have. I’ve never experienced this in the past either so I wasn’t worried till now. I will say even with the Powerhead half way down the glass it still manages to pull a cyclone from the top.

I have bought a couple tank bread angels that have not been wallet friendly and only a little bigger than a quarter. I have turned off power heads for this reason. Don’t know if it is needed, there is just nothing to them. So light in weight.

Unfortunately been in same boat

I’m almost wondering if this is what happened. I have the power heads set to turn off for 4 hours at night. I’m wondering if he happened to be “sleeping” against it when it turned back on. He always slept by the nori feeder. And that happens to be right by the power head in this tank

Very well could be. May have surprised him when it came on. I don't ever shut mine completely down for this reason. Always fearful some smaller fish will investigate it when off and get hurt when it comes on.

Not entirely sure what my dendro is doing here…. Pooping? This built up over 40 minutes then let go and floated to the top.

Well onto revision 5 of the filter cups. I shortened them up a little so they don’t sit so deep. You unless a snail is on the overflow you can’t hear the water passing through at all now. This tank has 3 return pumps which on the lowest setting if I’m doing my math right still turns the water over 5 times an hour. I’m willing to bet if I printed 6 of the random flow lock line nozzles I could probably get away without power heads.

On a brighter note my Naso tang is on the road to recovery!!! First couple hours I thought for sure he was done. Ran a couple places came back to find him grazing on the nori feeder. At that point I figured he had a chance. His eye is almost all the way back in and the bubbly cloudy look is going away.

After that run in I sat down for a couple hours and learned how to actually program my power heads. I have Jebao MlW-30’s and they move a ton of water! During the day they run a cross flow classic wave pattern. For 10 minutes before the lights turn on and off it runs a sine wave this stirs things up pretty good. Than over night they are just steady on.

Ive never been good with the whole wave maker settings/patterns so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
